Chapter 12 - Lines Crossed

|

The rain had turned to sleet by the time the black SUV reached the industrial shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Inside the vehicle, the glowing screen of Victor’s tactical laptop illuminated the dark interior.

"The audio files have been successfully transmitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Chicago Tribune," Victor reported, tapping the keys.

"Along with Commissioner Hayes's offshore bank accounts and the original ballistic reports David Carter hid."

"In twenty minutes, the entire federal courthouse will have arrest warrants for every dirty official on Moretti's payroll."

"Hayes won't go down quietly," Richard said, staring out at the frozen waters of the lake.

"He is attending the annual Mayor's Charity Gala at the Drake Hotel tonight with Julian Moretti."

"They think they are untouchable among the city's elite."

Emily sat beside Richard, wearing a dark woolen coat over a sleek black dress Victor's team had procured for her.

She looked at her hands, which had spent ten years healing wounds, saving lives, and upholding the oath to do no harm.

Tonight, she was walking into the lion's den with a man who dealt in death.

"Are you having second thoughts?" Richard asked quietly, noticing her silence.

Emily turned to him, looking at the sharp planes of his face, the dark shadows beneath his eyes, and the quiet devotion in his gaze.

"My whole life, I believed that rules and laws protected people," she whispered.

"I watched my father die for the law, and the law betrayed him."

"I watched my mother wither away in shame while the men who murdered my father wore tuxedoes to charity galas."

She reached out, placing her hand firmly over his holster.

"I'm not having second thoughts, Richard."

"I want them to look into my eyes when they fall."

A dark, electric spark leaped between them in the shadows of the vehicle.

Richard caught her waist, pulling her across the leather seat until she was flush against his broad chest.

He captured her mouth in a searing, possessive kiss that tasted of fire, rain, and vengeance.

Emily tangled her fingers in his thick dark hair, pulling him closer, letting the heat of his body consume every lingering doubt in her soul.

When he broke the kiss, his breathing was heavy, his forehead resting against hers.

"When this night is over, Emily, the Callahan syndicate is finished," he whispered against her lips.

Emily pulled back slightly, her blue eyes wide with surprise.

"What?"

"I promised your mother I would become the man your father died for."

"The shipping routes, the legitimate logistics, the real estate—everything is being transferred into a blind public trust."

"The weapons, the street crews, the extortion—it ends tonight."

"I won't let you live your life looking over your shoulder."

Tears pricked Emily's eyes, not from fear, but from the overwhelming realization of what he was sacrificing.

He was burning down an empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars just to give her peace.

"You don't have to destroy everything for me," she whispered.

"I'm not destroying it for you, Emily," Richard said, kissing the corner of her eye, tasting the salt of her tears.

"I'm saving myself."

"Because without you, there is nothing in this city worth keeping."

The vehicle slowed to a smooth stop beneath the grand awning of the Drake Hotel.

Valets in red coats stood waiting, umbrellas in hand, as high society laughed and drank champagne inside the glowing ballroom.

Richard stepped out first, buttoning his tailored jacket, then turned and offered Emily his arm.

This time, she took it without hesitation.

Together, the killer and the healer walked through the gilded doors to claim their reckoning.
