Chapter 9 - The Healer and the Killer

|

The hidden safehouse in the industrial district smelled of motor oil, cold concrete, and copper.

Richard lay on a heavy wooden workbench beneath a single bare halogen bulb, his face the color of wet chalk.

Emily cut away his ruined shirt with surgical shears, her hands shaking so violently she nearly dropped the metal blades.

He had two new bullet wounds: a graze across his collarbone and a deep through-and-through puncture in his right shoulder.

Worse, the abdominal incision she had closed yesterday was a torn, mangled mess of ruptured tissue.

"You're in hypovolemic shock," Emily said, her medical training taking over as she slapped sterile gauze against his wounds.

"No hospitals," Richard gasped, his teeth clattering from the sudden drop in blood pressure.

"Moretti has spotters at every ER in Cook County."

"If I don't clean this and ligate the bleeder in your shoulder, you will be dead before midnight!" she shouted.

Victor stepped up beside her, carrying a stainless steel surgical tray with clamps, scalpel blades, and local anesthetic.

"We keep a fully stocked field kit here, Miss Carter," Victor said, his eyes pleading.

"You are the only surgeon he has."

Emily looked down at Richard's chest, watching his laboured, shallow breaths.

She had spent her entire career saving lives by the book, under bright hospital lights with an army of doctors behind her.

Now, she was a mobster's battlefield medic on a grease-stained table.

"Hold his shoulders," Emily told Victor, dumping iodine directly over Richard's exposed flesh.

Richard groaned, a guttural sound of pure agony, his back arching off the wooden table as the chemical burned his raw tissue.

His fingers reached out, finding Emily's forearm and gripping it with terrifying strength.

"Do it," he rasped, looking directly into her eyes.

"I trust you, Emily."

Those four words hit her harder than any bullet.

For the next forty-five minutes, Emily lived in a waking nightmare.

She injected the local anesthetic, clamped the pulsating arterial branch in his shoulder, and tied off the bleeder with steady, relentless precision.

She cleaned the debris from his torn abdominal wall, flushing the wound with saline before laying down twenty-two heavy silk sutures.

Richard never screamed again.

He kept his dark, feverish eyes locked onto her face, watching her work with an intensity that defied death itself.

When she finally tied the last knot and taped the sterile pressure dressing into place, her knees gave out.

She collapsed onto an iron stool, stripping off her bloody gloves, her breath coming in ragged sobs.

Victor quietly stepped away, leaving them alone in the cavernous, shadowy garage.

Richard reached out slowly, his trembling hand finding hers on the edge of the workbench.

"You saved me again," he whispered, his voice faint but undeniably alive.

"Why did you jump in front of that window?" Emily asked, wiping soot and tears from her cheek with her sleeve.

"You could have stayed behind the brick."

"The bullet was heading for your head, Emily."

"You don't throw your life away for a debt, Richard!" she cried, her voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls.

"It's not about the debt anymore," Richard said, pulling her hand toward his chest until her palm rested over his racing heart.

"I spent twelve years running an empire built on blood and stone, thinking I was already a dead man walking."

"Then you walked into that trauma room and looked at me like I was just a man."

Emily leaned forward, unable to fight the magnetic pull that had drawn them together from the moment their eyes first met.

She brushed her fingers against his jaw, feeling the rough stubble and the fierce heat radiating from his skin.

"You are a dangerous man, Richard Callahan."

"And you," Richard whispered, raising his head just enough to press his lips against hers, "are the only thing good left in my life."

May you like

The kiss was raw, desperate, and tasted of salt, iron, and fire.

In that cold, dark garage, surrounded by enemies and the ghosts of their past, Emily knew she would never be able to walk away from him again.
