Chapter 13 - The Gala Ambush

|

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of crystal chandeliers, gold leaf, and high-society hypocrisy.

Hundreds of Chicago’s most powerful figures—senators, judges, corporate titans, and wealthy benefactors—sipped vintage champagne to the gentle sounds of a string quartet.

At the center of the room stood Police Commissioner Thomas Hayes, laughing loudly with Julian Moretti, who looked sleek and arrogant in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo.

They looked like gods who ruled the city from marble pedestals.

The grand double doors swung open, and the laughter in the ballroom died instantly, like a flame smothered by ice.

Richard Callahan strode into the hall, moving with the lethal grace of a predator entering a pen of sheep.

Beside him walked Emily Carter, her head held high, looking radiant and devastatingly regal in her black silk gown.

Whispers exploded across the room like wildfire.

"Is that Callahan?"

"I thought he was killed on the expressway yesterday!"

"Who is that woman on his arm?"

Julian Moretti’s champagne glass froze halfway to his lips, all the color draining from his tanned, handsome face.

Commissioner Hayes choked on his drink, his eyes darting toward the security guards stationed along the perimeter.

Richard didn't draw a weapon; he didn't need to.

He simply guided Emily through the parting crowd of politicians and socialites, his cold, piercing gaze locked onto Moretti.

"Julian," Richard said, his voice cutting through the silent room like a blade.

"You look surprised to see me."

"You were supposed to be at Navy Pier, Callahan," Moretti hissed under his breath, his hands trembling as he set his glass down.

"Navy Pier was a trap, Julian," Emily said, stepping forward until she stood directly in front of the man who had destroyed her childhood.

"Just like the alley behind Michigan Avenue twelve years ago."

Commissioner Hayes stepped between them, his face flushed with panicked rage.

"Callahan, you are trespassing on private property! Security, arrest this man!"

Nobody moved.

At that exact moment, every television screen mounted across the ballroom flickered, cutting off the charity auction broadcast.

The speakers throughout the ceiling hissed with static, followed by the clear, digitized voice of Detective David Carter recorded twelve years ago.

"This is Detective David Carter, badge number 4102. Commissioner Thomas Hayes just accepted a two-hundred-thousand-dollar cash delivery from Salvatore Moretti to alter the forensic reports on the South Side warehouse fires..."

The entire ballroom gasped in collective horror.

On the massive monitors, bank account routing numbers, wire transfer receipts, and internal memos bearing Commissioner Hayes’s signature began scrolling in high-resolution clarity.

"Turn that off!" Hayes screamed, his voice cracking into hysterics.

"Turn it off now!"

"It's being broadcast live to every news network in Illinois, Commissioner," Emily said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the silent hall.

"My father kept the receipts."

"And tonight, the city of Chicago finally knows the truth."

Julian Moretti’s eyes turned wild with desperate, cornered madness.

He reached beneath his tuxedo jacket, pulling a compact ceramic pistol from his waistband.

"If I'm going down, Callahan, you're coming with me!" Moretti roared, raising the weapon toward Emily's chest.

Pandemonium erupted instantly.

Women screamed, champagne flutes shattered against the parquet floor, and guests trampled one another scrambling for the exits.

Richard didn't hesitate.

He stepped across Emily's body, slamming his left palm upward into Moretti's wrist, deflecting the gun barrel toward the ceiling just as the weapon discharged with a deafening crack.

The crystal chandelier above them shattered, raining glittering shards down upon the panicked crowd.

Richard drove his elbow violently into Moretti's jaw, sending the syndicate boss crashing through a towering champagne pyramid in a violent cascade of broken glass and golden wine.
