Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME TO TAKE BENJAMIN AWAY|

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except the sound of Benjamin crying.
Twenty-four elegantly dressed guests sat frozen around the dining table, their untouched meals forgotten as they watched Luca Moretti kneel beside his nine-year-old son.
The little boy was clutching his father's hand so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
Luca didn't look at Vanessa.
He didn't look at the guests.
He simply held Benjamin's trembling fingers between his own.
"Ben, sweetheart, look at me."
Benjamin slowly raised his tearstained face.
"Nobody is taking you away from me."
The child blinked.
"Not even after Saturday?"
"Not after Saturday, not next month, and not ever because someone decides you're inconvenient."
Benjamin made a small, broken sound and threw both arms around his father's neck.
Luca caught him immediately.
I watched the most feared man in our part of New York hold his son as though the entire world had narrowed to one frightened little boy.
Then he raised his head.
"Vanessa, who was the woman?"
Vanessa stood beside her chair, gripping its upholstered back.
"Luca, this is getting completely out of proportion."
"Her name."
"She was an educational consultant."
"Why did an educational consultant come to collect my son?"
"She wasn't collecting him."
Benjamin pulled away from his father's shoulder.
"She had a suitcase, Daddy."
Vanessa's expression tightened.
"Benjamin, please."
"She said my new room already had a bed."
The silence that followed seemed to press against my ears.
Luca gently brushed the tears from Benjamin's cheeks.
"Did she tell you where that room was?"
Benjamin nodded.
"Somewhere with mountains."
Vanessa tried to laugh.
"Children misunderstand things all the time."
Luca stood.
"Claire, please take Benjamin to the sitting room."
I approached the boy, but he immediately tightened his grip on his father's jacket.
"No, Daddy."
Luca bent down again.
"I'm not sending you away, Ben."
"Promise you won't disappear?"
His father swallowed.
"I promise."
Only then did Benjamin allow me to take his hand.
We had barely reached the doorway when Luca spoke again.
"Marco, close the outer gates until we've accounted for everyone."
A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped forward from beside the entrance.
Marco Diaz had supervised security at the Moretti estate for nearly six years.
Unlike many of the men employed by Luca, he had always treated the household staff with ordinary kindness.
"Yes, sir."
Luca addressed the guests.
"The celebration is over, and my staff will arrange for everyone to leave."
Vanessa stepped toward him.
"You can't humiliate me like this in front of everyone."
Luca looked at her without raising his voice.
"You told my son he was being removed from his home."
"I was arranging a good education!"
"Without asking me?"
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
I guided Benjamin into the sitting room, where Caroline's portrait hung above the fireplace.
He immediately climbed onto the sofa and pulled his knees against his chest.
"Miss Claire?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do you think Daddy believes me?"
I sat beside him.
"I think your daddy is trying very hard to understand what happened."
Benjamin stared at his shoes.
"Vanessa said grown-ups don't believe children who complain."
My throat tightened.
"Sometimes grown-ups make terrible mistakes, Ben."
"Did I make a mistake telling?"
I shook my head.
"No, sweetheart, you told the truth."
He leaned against my arm, exhausted.
For the next fifteen minutes, I listened to the sounds of expensive shoes crossing the marble hallway and car engines starting outside.
Eventually, Marco appeared at the sitting-room door.
"Claire, Mr. Moretti would like to see you."
Benjamin immediately became frightened.
I squeezed his hand.
"I'll be right back."
In the hallway, Luca stood beside a narrow table covered with documents.
Vanessa was sitting in a chair several feet away.
Her engagement ring caught the light whenever her fingers moved.
Marco placed a cream-colored envelope in front of Luca.
"This was found in the visitor's vehicle."
Luca opened it.
I watched his expression change as he read the first page.
"What is Hawthorne Ridge Academy?"
Vanessa looked away.
"It's an excellent residential school."
"For nine-year-old children?"
"It's a specialized institution."
Luca flipped to another page.
"Located almost three thousand miles from here."
Vanessa said nothing.
Then Luca held up a document.
"Claire, did Benjamin mention a school to you?"
"No, sir."
"Did he ever tell you he wanted to leave?"
"Never."
Luca turned the page so I could see it.
My eyes settled on a sentence near the bottom.
The custodial parent requests immediate residential placement and temporary restriction of direct contact.
My stomach tightened.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"It's standard wording."
Luca ignored her.
"Who signed this?"
She stared at the document.
"You did."
The words seemed to land like stones on the marble floor.
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"I have never seen this document."
"Perhaps you signed it with the other wedding arrangements."
"Vanessa, I know what my signature looks like."
He turned the paper over.
At the bottom was a familiar black signature.
Luca Moretti.
Beside it stood the name of a witness.
Dominic Rinaldi.
I recognized it immediately.
Dominic was Luca's closest business adviser, a man who had been part of the Moretti household long before I started working there.
Luca stared at the name for several seconds.
Then he reached for his phone.
"Get Dominic here."
Vanessa suddenly rose.
"Luca, don't."
He looked at her.
"Why not?"
Her eyes flickered toward the envelope.
"Because you're making a terrible mistake."
Luca placed the document back on the table.
"The mistake was believing someone who could look at a hungry child and call it discipline."
He turned toward Marco.
"Vanessa is leaving tonight, and she is not to have contact with Benjamin."
Vanessa's face twisted.
"You'll regret treating me this way."
Luca didn't answer.
I thought that would be the end of the confrontation.
But as Marco gathered the papers, another document slipped from the envelope.
It was a schedule.
There were three dates printed across the top.
Friday: Final authorization.
Saturday: Child transfer.
Monday: Financial administration review.
Beneath the schedule, someone had written a short instruction in blue ink.
Complete transfer before the father can withdraw consent.
Luca read the sentence twice.
Then he slowly looked toward the woman he had intended to marry.
"Vanessa, why would anyone need to move my son before I could change my mind?"
For the first time that evening, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
And I realized that Benjamin's missing dinner had exposed something far more dangerous than cruelty.
May you like
Someone had been preparing to take that little boy away.
And whatever they were planning wasn't supposed to stop with him.
