Chapter 12 - THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENED|

At nine o'clock Saturday morning, the church bells began ringing.
They had been scheduled for Luca Moretti's wedding.
The coordinator had canceled the ceremony, but the bells were part of the church's regular Saturday service.
Still, when I heard them from the hospital courtyard, they sounded like an echo from another life.
A life in which Vanessa Bellini had become Benjamin's stepmother.
A life in which the little boy would have disappeared into a distant residential school.
A life in which Caroline's stolen fortune might have passed into the hands of the people who had betrayed her.
I stood beside a stone planter, breathing in the cool morning air.
My knee was wrapped in a support bandage.
The hospital had examined it and confirmed that nothing was broken.
But I knew the bruises on my body would heal long before the fear inside me disappeared.
My phone rang.
It was my mother.
"Claire, honey, have you slept?"
"A little."
"You sound exhausted."
I smiled weakly.
"I am."
"How's Benjamin?"
"He's safe."
My mother exhaled.
"Thank God."
I sat on a bench.
"Mom, I was so scared."
"I know, sweetheart."
"I kept thinking about what would have happened if I'd listened to Vanessa."
My mother's voice softened.
"Then remember what actually happened."
I closed my eyes.
"You spoke up, Claire."
Tears slid down my cheeks.
"And when things became dangerous, you kept telling the truth."
I thought of Benjamin's terrified face.
Then of the moment he had run into his father's arms.
My mother continued.
"Sometimes doing the right thing doesn't stop people from trying to hurt you."
I nodded even though she couldn't see me.
"But it means you can live with the person you see in the mirror."
After we hung up, I returned to Benjamin's room.
Luca was helping him eat breakfast.
There were scrambled eggs, buttered toast, and a small bowl of strawberries.
Benjamin took a bite.
Then looked at his father.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Can I have another piece of toast?"
Luca's face softened.
"You can have as much as you're hungry for."
Benjamin smiled.
It was such an ordinary moment.
But after everything that had happened, it felt extraordinary.
A nurse entered to check his temperature.
Then Elena appeared at the doorway.
"Luca, we need to talk."
I offered to sit with Benjamin.
He nodded.
Before leaving, he kissed his son's forehead.
"I'll be back soon."
Benjamin looked at him.
"You promise?"
Luca smiled sadly.
"I promise, and if anything delays me, I'll call."
Benjamin nodded.
This time, he seemed to believe him.
I waited until Luca and Elena had left before sitting beside the bed.
Benjamin pushed a strawberry around his plate.
"Miss Claire?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Is Vanessa going to jail?"
I took a breath.
"The police are investigating what happened."
He thought about that.
"Do you think she'll be angry with me?"
"No, Ben."
I corrected myself.
"She might feel angry, but you are not responsible for her feelings or her choices."
He looked relieved.
Then he picked up another strawberry.
A few minutes later, Detective Brooks arrived.
She asked if Benjamin wanted to speak with a child-support specialist.
The hospital had arranged for someone trained to help children after frightening experiences.
Benjamin looked uncertain.
"Will Daddy be there?"
"If you want him to be."
He considered the answer.
"Then okay."
I watched the specialist approach him with gentle patience.
For the first time, Benjamin was surrounded by adults who asked what he wanted instead of deciding everything for him.
Downstairs, Luca was facing a very different conversation.
Elena had informed him that investigators wanted full access to the trust records and several business accounts.
Some of those accounts belonged to companies that had operated under Dominic's supervision.
Others involved Luca's own decisions.
The distinction mattered.
The authorities would have to establish who had authorized each transaction.
And Luca couldn't simply declare himself innocent because Dominic had betrayed him.
When he returned to Benjamin's room, his expression was serious.
He asked me to speak with him in the hallway.
"Claire, there's something I need you to understand."
I waited.
"Some of the businesses I inherited from my father operated outside the law."
I wasn't surprised.
Everyone in our part of New York knew the Moretti name carried a history that went far beyond ordinary business.
But hearing Luca acknowledge it so plainly felt different.
He continued.
"I spent years telling myself that keeping those operations separate from Benjamin's life was enough."
He looked toward the hospital door.
"It wasn't."
I said nothing.
"I've agreed to provide investigators with records that may implicate me in decisions I made."
My heart tightened.
"What happens to Benjamin?"
"Whatever happens, he'll be protected."
His expression softened.
"Rose has agreed to help, and Elena is arranging safeguards that don't depend on me making promises I might not be able to keep."
I stared at him.
For the first time, Luca wasn't pretending that his power could solve every problem.
He was accepting that some mistakes required consequences.
"I don't know exactly what this will cost me," he admitted.
Then he looked through the doorway at his son.
"But I know what it would cost him if I kept lying."
Before I could answer, Elena approached quickly.
"Luca."
He turned.
"What happened?"
"Detective Brooks just received confirmation."
"About Dominic?"
She nodded.
"He was stopped while attempting to leave the state."
Luca went still.
"Is he in custody?"
"Yes."
Elena took a breath.
"And investigators recovered another set of financial records from his vehicle."
Luca waited.
"Some of them relate to Caroline's accident."
My heart began racing.
Elena lowered her voice.
"There's also a record of a payment made to the mechanic who worked on her car."
Luca closed his eyes.
For three years, he had believed that the woman he loved died because of a terrible accident.
Now the evidence pointed toward something far more horrifying.
Caroline may have been killed because she discovered the truth.
And the man who had stood beside Luca at her funeral might have helped arrange her death.
Luca slowly looked at me.
"I thought the worst thing I could do was lose my empire."
His voice trembled.
"I was wrong."
Then he opened the hospital door and returned to his son.
Because the empire could wait.
May you like
The truth could not.
And Benjamin Moretti had already lost enough.
