Chapter 9 - THE LITTLE BOY WHO LEFT A CLUE|

Luca arrived at Rose's farmhouse less than thirty minutes after Benjamin disappeared.

I was sitting on the porch steps with Caroline's pink ribbon pressed between my fingers.

My knee throbbed.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

But none of that mattered compared with the image repeating inside my mind.

Benjamin reaching toward me.

Benjamin screaming for his father.

Benjamin being carried into that dark vehicle.

When Luca stepped out of the car, I tried to stand.

My injured leg gave way.

He caught my arm before I fell.

"Claire, you're hurt."

"I'm sorry."

The words escaped before I could stop them.

His expression changed.

"What?"

"I was supposed to protect him."

Luca crouched in front of me.

"Look at me."

I couldn't.

"Claire."

I finally raised my eyes.

"You did not take my son."

My throat tightened.

"You did not plan this."

I nodded shakily.

"And you're going to help us bring him home."

Behind Luca, several police vehicles pulled into the driveway.

A woman in a navy coat stepped out of the first car.

"Detective Maya Brooks."

She showed us her identification.

"We're coordinating the search."

Luca stood.

"Tell me what you need."

Detective Brooks studied him.

"Your complete cooperation, Mr. Moretti."

"You have it."

"That includes access to your security footage and any communications with the people involved."

Luca nodded.

"Everything."

She looked slightly surprised.

Then she turned toward me.

"Claire, I need you to tell me exactly what happened."

I described the kidnapping again.

This time, I forced myself to remember every detail.

The dark SUV.

Owen Miller's security jacket.

The second man's voice.

The direction they had driven.

And the pink ribbon Benjamin had dropped.

Detective Brooks photographed it carefully.

"Did he drop this accidentally?"

"I don't know."

I looked down.

"But Benjamin was holding it earlier."

She nodded.

"Then we'll preserve it."

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A new message appeared.

This time, there was a video attached.

I nearly dropped the phone.

Detective Brooks stepped closer.

"Don't delete anything."

The video lasted twenty-two seconds.

Benjamin sat on a wooden chair in a room with pale blue walls.

His eyes were red.

A small bruise marked one wrist.

Someone standing behind the camera ordered him to speak.

Benjamin looked frightened.

"Daddy, please do what they say."

My heart shattered.

He swallowed.

"I want to come home."

Then a man's voice interrupted.

"Tell him about the documents."

Benjamin began crying.

"They want Mommy's notebook."

The video ended.

Luca watched it twice.

His face remained almost expressionless.

But his hands were trembling.

Detective Brooks immediately requested a digital trace.

"Was that Dominic?" she asked.

Luca shook his head.

"No, but the voice belongs to one of his drivers."

Marco confirmed it.

The detective began issuing instructions to the officers around her.

I sat down again and stared at the frozen image of Benjamin.

Something caught my attention.

Behind his chair was a blue wooden door.

Above it hung a copper bell.

I leaned forward.

"Wait."

Detective Brooks looked at me.

"What is it?"

"That bell."

She enlarged the image.

I recognized the unusual shape of its handle.

Four months earlier, I had accompanied Benjamin to a charity event at an old waterfront warehouse.

Caroline's foundation had once used the building to distribute winter coats to families.

Benjamin had spent half the afternoon ringing a large copper bell beside the loading office.

He'd laughed every time the sound echoed through the empty building.

I looked at Luca.

"Do you remember the Harbor Light warehouse?"

He frowned.

"The old donation center?"

"Benjamin went there with Mrs. Carter and me in July."

I pointed at the screen.

"That bell was hanging above the office door."

Marco leaned over the phone.

"I've seen it."

Detective Brooks immediately asked for the address.

Luca gave it to her.

"Who owns the building?" she asked.

Elena, who had arrived with him, opened her laptop.

"Caroline's foundation leased it years ago."

She searched the property records.

Then her face changed.

"The lease was transferred to North Harbor Investment Partners."

Luca stared at her.

"The Bellini company?"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Detective Brooks radioed the information to her team.

Within minutes, officers were checking nearby traffic cameras and property records.

I stood beside the porch railing, listening to their conversations.

I couldn't stop imagining Benjamin alone in that strange room.

He hated sleeping without a night-light.

He had been afraid to eat in his own home.

And now he was somewhere with people who had already hurt him.

My phone rang.

It was my mother.

I answered with shaking hands.

"Mom?"

"Claire, sweetheart, I'm safe."

I squeezed my eyes shut.

"Thank God."

She hesitated.

"Did they find the little boy?"

"Not yet."

My mother was quiet.

Then she said something I desperately needed to hear.

"Keep telling them what you know."

I looked toward Detective Brooks.

"I will."

"That child trusted you enough to ask for help, Claire."

My tears began falling again.

"Don't let fear make you forget that."

After we hung up, Elena approached Luca.

"The police found something."

Detective Brooks turned toward us.

"A traffic camera captured a vehicle matching the SUV heading toward the waterfront."

Luca took one step forward.

"Was Benjamin inside?"

"We can't confirm that yet."

Another officer called her name.

She listened to his report.

Then looked directly at Luca.

"We have surveillance footage from the Harbor Light property."

My heart began pounding.

"Did you see him?"

Detective Brooks nodded slowly.

"The SUV entered the loading area twenty-eight minutes after the abduction."

Luca closed his eyes for one brief moment.

Then he opened them.

"Let's go."

The detective raised her hand.

"Mr. Moretti, our officers will handle the rescue."

Luca stared at her.

"I understand."

She continued.

"But there's something else you need to know."

"What?"

"The building's security camera captured a woman entering shortly before the SUV arrived."

She turned her tablet toward us.

The picture showed a woman in a dark coat walking through the side entrance.

Her face was clearly visible.

Vanessa Bellini.

The woman who had claimed she was only trying to teach Benjamin a lesson.

The woman who had been preparing to marry his father.

The woman who had cried when Luca canceled the wedding.

She was waiting inside the warehouse when his son was brought there.

And suddenly, there was no longer any question about whether she had been involved.
