Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN AT THE GATE FINALLY TELLS THE TRUTH|

Friday morning arrived beneath a gray sky.
I had slept less than two hours, but the Moretti mansion was already alive with quiet urgency.
Security officers moved through the hallways carrying radios.
Elena Torres had returned with two assistants and several boxes of documents.
And Luca had canceled every business appointment on his calendar.
The wedding was still scheduled for Saturday.
But there was no sign that anyone intended to celebrate it.
At eight thirty, Marco entered the breakfast room.
"Mr. Moretti, the woman from yesterday is here."
Luca looked up from the table.
"Bring her in."
I was helping Benjamin spread strawberry jam on his toast when the woman appeared.
She was exactly as I remembered.
Brown hair.
Gray coat.
A blue folder pressed against her chest.
"My name is Nora Whitcomb," she said nervously.
"I'm a placement coordinator with the agency handling Hawthorne Ridge Academy's incoming students."
Luca didn't offer her a chair immediately.
"Did you come here yesterday to take my son?"
Nora looked toward Benjamin.
"Yes, but only to a local orientation residence before his scheduled transfer."
Benjamin immediately reached for my hand.
Luca noticed.
"Ben, would you like to finish breakfast in the kitchen with Claire?"
The boy nodded.
I carried his plate into the kitchen, where Mrs. Carter had returned for her morning shift.
I asked her to stay with him while I went back to the doorway.
Luca had left the breakfast-room door open.
I could hear every word.
Nora placed her folder on the table.
"Mr. Moretti, I want you to know that I refused to complete yesterday's collection."
"Why?"
"Because the situation didn't seem right."
She opened the folder.
"Your fiancée submitted an application stating that you no longer wished to exercise day-to-day parental responsibility."
Luca's face tightened.
"That's a lie."
"I understand that now."
Nora swallowed.
"She also claimed Benjamin had serious behavioral problems and needed immediate residential intervention."
I felt sick.
Benjamin's greatest behavioral problem was that he still missed his dead mother.
Luca leaned forward.
"What happened when you met him?"
Nora looked down.
"He asked whether he could bring his mother's photograph."
Luca didn't move.
"I told him personal photographs were allowed."
Her voice became shaky.
"Then he asked if his father would visit."
She paused.
"When I told him I wasn't sure, he started crying."
Luca's hands curled into fists beneath the table.
Nora continued.
"He said his daddy was alive and wanted him at home."
"Why didn't you call me?"
"I tried."
She showed Luca her phone records.
"Every call was directed to a business number, and a man identifying himself as Dominic Rinaldi told me he was authorized to speak for you."
Luca glanced toward Elena.
Nora removed another page from her folder.
"Mr. Rinaldi told me you didn't want to speak with your son before the transfer because it might upset him."
The room became silent.
I watched Luca look toward the kitchen.
Benjamin was sitting at the counter with Mrs. Carter, carefully cutting his toast into tiny squares.
He looked like any ordinary little boy.
Except he kept checking the doorway to make sure his father hadn't disappeared.
Nora wiped at her eyes.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Moretti."
Luca finally spoke.
"You did the right thing by refusing to take him."
Nora nodded.
"There's something else you need to see."
She opened a sealed envelope.
Inside were copies of identification records, medical forms, and a document granting temporary decision-making authority over Benjamin.
Vanessa's name appeared throughout.
But not as Vanessa Bellini.
The forms identified her as Vanessa Moretti.
Spouse of the child's father.
Elena stared at the page.
"They aren't married."
Nora looked confused.
"According to our records, they were."
Luca stood.
"This wedding isn't happening."
He picked up his phone and called the wedding coordinator.
There was no dramatic speech.
No shouting.
Just a few controlled sentences canceling the ceremony, reception, and every arrangement connected to Vanessa Bellini.
Then he turned back to Nora.
"How many people have seen these documents?"
"Several administrators."
"Will you preserve everything?"
"Of course."
Elena stepped forward.
"We'll also need a written account of your visit."
Nora agreed immediately.
After she left, Luca entered the kitchen.
Benjamin looked up from his toast.
"Daddy?"
Luca sat beside him.
"The wedding is canceled, Ben."
The little boy froze.
"Because of me?"
My heart sank.
Luca shook his head.
"No, sweetheart."
He gently lifted Benjamin onto his knee.
"It's canceled because I was going to marry someone who hurt you."
Benjamin studied his father's face.
"Are you sad?"
Luca took a moment before answering.
"I'm sad I didn't see what was happening."
Benjamin wrapped his arms around him.
"I'm sorry, Daddy."
Luca kissed the top of his head.
"You have nothing to apologize for."
I turned away before they could see my tears.
For the first time, I believed that Benjamin might truly be safe.
But an hour later, Elena returned from a call with the bank.
Her expression was grim.
"Someone filed an instruction to move forty-six million dollars out of Caroline's trust."
Luca stared at her.
"Who?"
"The request bears your electronic authorization and Dominic's approval."
"Freeze it."
"I'm trying."
Elena took a breath.
"The transfer is scheduled for Monday, but the bank says someone attempted to accelerate it this morning."
Luca looked toward the stairs where Benjamin had gone to play.
Then he asked one quiet question.
"Where is the money supposed to go?"
Elena held out the document.
"A holding company connected to the Bellini family."
And I finally understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to become Benjamin's mother.
May you like
She hadn't just wanted a place in Luca Moretti's family.
She wanted control of everything Caroline had left behind.
