Chapter 6 - THE FORTY-SIX-MILLION-DOLLAR BETRAYAL|

At eleven o'clock Friday morning, Luca Moretti walked out of his mansion carrying his dead wife's music box.

He wore the same black suit he had worn the night before.

But something about him had changed.

The man who once seemed untouchable now looked like someone standing at the edge of a truth he had spent years refusing to see.

Elena had arranged an urgent appointment at the bank.

The brass key hidden inside Caroline's music box belonged to a private safe-deposit box.

Nobody knew what was inside.

Not even Luca.

Before leaving, he crouched beside Benjamin in the sitting room.

"I'm going to find something Mommy left for us."

Benjamin looked worried.

"Will you come back?"

Luca took his hand.

"Before dinner."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Benjamin nodded.

Then he reached into his pocket and produced Caroline's worn pink ribbon.

"Can you take this with you?"

Luca accepted it.

"Of course."

"So Mommy knows we're looking."

Luca held the ribbon between his fingers for a moment.

Then he pulled his son into an embrace.

I watched them from the doorway.

Caroline had been gone for three years.

Yet somehow, she remained the person holding this broken family together.

Luca asked me to accompany him to the bank because I had found the music box.

I hesitated.

"Mr. Moretti, are you sure?"

"Claire, you've already seen more of the truth than most people in this house."

I glanced toward Benjamin.

Mrs. Carter had agreed to remain with him while Marco stationed trusted security officers around the property.

Finally, I nodded.

During the drive, Luca barely spoke.

The city passed beyond the tinted windows.

Traffic lights.

Coffee shops.

Parents holding children's hands.

Ordinary lives unfolding on sidewalks while ours seemed to be falling apart.

At the bank, Elena met us in a private office.

A manager checked the key and accompanied Luca into the vault.

I waited with Elena until they returned carrying a narrow metal box.

Luca placed it on the table.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the lid.

Then he opened it.

Inside lay a blue leather notebook, a small flash drive, and several sealed envelopes.

There was also a photograph of Benjamin at six years old, smiling beside Caroline.

On the back, she had written:

Whatever happens, my little boy must always know he was loved.

Luca turned the photograph over.

His eyes filled.

I had seen him angry.

I had seen him cold.

But I had never seen him cry.

Not until he held that picture.

Elena gently touched his arm.

"Luca, we need to examine the documents."

He nodded.

The blue notebook contained dates and amounts written in Caroline's careful handwriting.

Every few pages, she had circled a name.

Dominic Rinaldi.

Other pages listed companies I had never heard of.

Bellini Development Group.

North Harbor Investment Partners.

Westbridge Consulting.

Elena examined the records.

"These payments were disguised as foundation expenses."

Luca looked at her.

"How much?"

"Over eighteen million dollars before Caroline died."

The number made my head spin.

Elena continued reading.

"She believed the foundation was being used to move money through businesses controlled by Dominic and the Bellini family."

Luca sat down heavily.

"Caroline told me money was disappearing."

His voice cracked.

"I said Dominic had always handled our accounts."

I watched him cover his face.

"She thought I would protect her, and I told her to stop worrying."

I wanted to say something comforting.

But some truths deserved to be faced rather than covered with easy words.

So I remained quiet.

Elena inserted the flash drive into a secured laptop.

Several folders appeared.

Bank statements.

Correspondence.

Transaction histories.

And one audio file labeled October 14.

Three years earlier.

Eleven days before Caroline's fatal accident.

Elena looked at Luca.

"Do you want to hear it?"

He nodded.

The recording began with the sound of a door closing.

Then Caroline's voice filled the room.

It was warm, clear, and unmistakably frightened.

"Dominic, I know what you did."

A man's voice answered.

"Caroline, you're misunderstanding the accounts."

"No, I'm not."

Papers rustled.

Caroline continued.

"You moved money out of Benjamin's trust without my authorization."

Dominic laughed softly.

"You're making a very serious accusation."

"I have copies of everything."

His voice hardened.

"Then you should think carefully about what you're planning to do with them."

There was a pause.

Then Caroline spoke again.

"I'm going to the authorities."

Another silence.

And Dominic said something that made Luca sit completely still.

"Tomorrow is a long way off, Caroline."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Luca rose from his chair.

"Elena, I want every document preserved."

She nodded.

"I'll arrange independent forensic copies and contact the investigators."

"And the transfer?"

"The bank has placed a temporary hold while the signatures are reviewed."

Luca looked down at Caroline's notebook.

For the first time, I saw something other than anger in his eyes.

Resolve.

On the ride home, he stared out the window for a long time.

Then he spoke without looking at me.

"Claire, Caroline begged me to believe her."

I didn't answer.

"I failed her."

His hands tightened.

"But I'm not going to fail Benjamin the same way."

I believed him.

At least, I wanted to.

Then Elena called.

Her voice came through the car speakers.

"Luca, we found something in the transaction records."

"What?"

"The forty-six-million-dollar transfer isn't going directly into Vanessa's account."

"Then where?"

"A company created six weeks ago."

Luca's expression became dangerous.

"Who owns it?"

Elena hesitated.

"The registered owner is listed as Benjamin Moretti."

My breath caught.

Luca stared at the phone.

"But the authorization permits an adult representative to control the account."

"Which adult?"

Elena answered quietly.

"Vanessa Moretti."

The name that didn't yet legally exist.

The name Vanessa had been preparing to use after Saturday.

The wedding wasn't simply meant to make her Luca's wife.

May you like

It was meant to give a fraudulent financial arrangement the appearance of legitimacy.

And suddenly, canceling the ceremony had become the most dangerous thing Luca could have done.
