Chapter 11 - THE SECRET CAROLINE TOOK TO HER GRAVE|

The hospital room was quiet when Benjamin finally fell asleep.

It was almost four in the morning.

Saturday.

The day Luca Moretti was supposed to marry Vanessa Bellini.

Instead, he sat beside his son's hospital bed, holding a small hand beneath the white blanket.

I stood near the window with a paper cup of coffee that had gone cold.

Nobody had asked me to stay.

But I couldn't bring myself to leave.

Benjamin stirred in his sleep.

Luca immediately leaned closer.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

The little boy settled again.

For several minutes, Luca watched him breathe.

Then he spoke quietly.

"Claire, I used to think being a good father meant giving him everything."

I looked toward him.

"Every toy, every opportunity, every comfort."

He swallowed.

"I built a house full of things."

His gaze moved around the hospital room.

"But I stopped noticing what he needed."

I set down my coffee.

"Benjamin needs you to listen to him."

Luca nodded.

"I know that now."

He looked at me.

"Why did you help him when Vanessa threatened your job?"

I thought about the question.

About the first time I had seen Benjamin carrying Caroline's photograph around the house.

About the way he always thanked the kitchen staff.

And about how he tried so hard not to make anyone angry.

"Because he was hungry."

Luca waited.

"And because nobody should have to earn the right to be fed."

His eyes filled.

"Caroline would have liked you."

I looked away.

I didn't know how to respond to that.

A knock sounded at the door.

Elena entered with Detective Brooks.

Both women looked exhausted.

But there was something different in their expressions.

Purpose.

Detective Brooks asked Luca to join her in the hallway.

He looked at Benjamin.

I understood.

"I'll stay with him."

Luca hesitated.

Then nodded.

When he returned fifteen minutes later, he looked shaken.

"Claire, Elena wants you to hear something."

I followed him into the small waiting room.

Elena had opened Caroline's blue notebook to its final pages.

Detective Brooks stood beside her.

"We're reviewing the circumstances surrounding Caroline's death," the detective explained.

I felt a chill.

Luca sat down.

Elena pointed to an entry dated two days before the accident.

Caroline had written about a visit to a repair shop.

She had taken her car in after noticing that something felt wrong with the brakes.

The mechanic had assured her everything was normal.

But Caroline had recorded the business name.

Southpoint Auto Service.

Elena placed another document beside the notebook.

"This business received a large payment from a Bellini-linked account the week after Caroline died."

I stared at the amount.

Seventy-five thousand dollars.

Detective Brooks spoke carefully.

"That payment alone doesn't prove what happened."

Luca nodded.

"But combined with the threats and financial evidence, it gives investigators a reason to examine the accident again."

Elena opened another file.

"Caroline also saved a message from Dominic."

It had been sent the evening before she died.

We can settle this privately.

Caroline had replied:

Not anymore.

I looked toward Luca.

He seemed to have aged years in a single night.

"Where was she going?" I asked.

He swallowed.

"She told me she was meeting someone about the foundation."

His voice weakened.

"I thought it was another accountant."

Detective Brooks examined the notes.

"Caroline had scheduled an appointment with investigators."

Luca stared at her.

"She was going to report Dominic?"

"It appears so."

He lowered his head.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered something I could barely hear.

"She was trying to save our son."

Elena reached for the final envelope from the safe-deposit box.

"We haven't opened this one yet."

Across the front, Caroline had written:

For Benjamin, when he is old enough to understand.

Luca shook his head.

"Not now."

Elena nodded and put it aside.

Caroline had left that message for her child.

He deserved to receive it when he was ready.

Detective Brooks then handed Luca a preliminary report.

"One more thing."

He looked up.

"During the warehouse search, officers recovered a phone belonging to Owen Miller."

She paused.

"It contains messages about the planned transfer and communications with Dominic."

Luca's expression tightened.

"Does it connect him to Caroline's death?"

"We're still examining the records."

She turned a page.

"But one message references a payment to the same auto shop."

I felt my stomach twist.

A man who had participated in Benjamin's kidnapping had also been communicating about the garage tied to Caroline's fatal accident.

The conspiracy had roots stretching back years.

And Vanessa had entered Luca's life while those roots were still hidden.

Elena spoke softly.

"Luca, there's evidence Vanessa's family had financial dealings with Dominic long before you met her."

Luca closed his eyes.

"She told me they barely knew each other."

"That wasn't true."

The room became silent.

I thought of Vanessa's red silk gown.

Her enormous engagement ring.

Her insistence that Benjamin call her Mom.

The way she had removed Caroline's photograph.

She hadn't simply wanted to replace a dead woman in Luca's life.

She had wanted to erase the only person who had understood what was happening.

Then Luca stood.

"Where is Dominic now?"

Detective Brooks answered.

"We're still looking."

Luca looked toward the hospital corridor.

His son was sleeping a few doors away.

He took a slow breath.

"Whatever you need from me, you'll have it."

The detective studied him.

"Even if the investigation reaches your own businesses?"

Luca didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Elena looked sharply toward him.

"Luca, you should understand what that could mean."

He nodded.

"I do."

Then he said something that changed the way I saw him forever.

"Caroline wanted me to protect the truth, and I refused to hear her."

May you like

He looked toward his son's room.

"I'm not making that mistake again."
