Chapter 14 - The Master and the Maid

|

Three months had passed since the dramatic wedding dinner that shook Chicago’s underground society to its core.

Spring had arrived, melting the bitter winter snow and blooming bright red roses across the Moretti estate gardens.

Frank and Evelyn spent their afternoons walking along the stone pathways, their laughter echoing through the warm afternoon air.

They were making up for the four decades stolen from them, their love completely untouched by the passing of time.

Vanessa had moved into a private cottage on the grounds, dedicating sixteen hours a day to running her mother’s burn foundation.

Inside the vast mansion library, Claire Bennett was carefully arranging books on the high mahogany shelves.

Her uniform was pristine, but her mind was lost in thought, remembering the intense events of the past winter.

"You don't need to dust those books anymore, Claire," a deep, familiar voice spoke from the arched doorway.

Claire turned around, startled, to find Luca Moretti leaning casually against the doorframe, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit.

"It is my job, Mr. Moretti," Claire replied politely, dipping her head slightly with customary deference.

Luca walked into the room, his long strides closing the distance between them until he stood only two feet away.

He reached out, his hand gently grasping the feather duster from her fingers and placing it on a nearby writing desk.

"You are not a servant in this house, Claire, and you haven't been since the night you stood up for Evelyn," Luca said softly.

Claire looked up into his intense, dark eyes, feeling her heart race against her ribs in a way she couldn't control.

"I was only doing what was right, Luca," she whispered, using his first name for the very first time.

"Nobody deserved to be treated the way Vanessa treated her that night."

Luca looked down at her with a gentle, unguarded warmth that he showed to no one else in the world.

"Everyone in my life has wanted something from me, Claire," Luca admitted, his voice rough with genuine emotion.

"Money, power, territory, protection... they all looked at me and saw what they could take."

"You looked at an old woman with burned hands and saw a human being who needed kindness."

"And when my father was about to drink poison, you didn't run away; you ran toward the danger to protect us."

Luca reached down, his fingers gently interlocking with Claire’s small, steady hand, sending a shiver through her entire body.

"My father has Evelyn, and my sister has found her redemption," Luca whispered, his thumb caressing the back of her wrist.

"The only thing missing from this house... is a woman with your courage standing by my side as my equal."

Claire looked into his eyes, seeing the fierce, unyielding devotion of a man who would move mountains to keep her safe.

"I would be honored to stand with you, Luca," Claire answered, her beautiful smile lighting up the quiet library.
