Chapter 3 - The Mark Behind the Ear

Vanessa staggered backward until her spine hit the carved wooden mantel of the fireplace.
"No," Vanessa stammered, shaking her head violently as her diamond earrings swayed in the warm candlelight.
"This is an insane lie cooked up by a jealous maid and a homeless beggar."
"Look at me, Luca!" Vanessa pleaded, turning her desperate eyes toward the mafia boss.
"I am a Bellini princess, born into wealth, power, and prestige."
"There is no possible way that broken, burned creature gave birth to me."
Evelyn looked at Vanessa not with anger, but with profound, heartbreaking sorrow.
"You can deny my face, child, but you cannot deny what was marked on your skin the moment you arrived."
Evelyn reached into her weathered canvas bag and pulled out an antique leather-bound journal.
"When my daughter was born, she had a dark birthmark shaped like a crescent moon behind her left ear."
"It was the exact same mark that Frank’s mother carried until the day she died."
Frank’s breath caught sharply in his throat as his knuckles turned white against the edge of the table.
"That is true," Frank whispered, his voice cracking with forty years of buried grief.
"My mother Maria had that exact mark, and so did her father before her."
Vanessa’s hand involuntarily rose to the side of her neck, hovering just below her left earlobe.
Every single person at the wedding table watched the bride’s fingers tremble against her flawless skin.
For thirty-eight years, Vanessa had used heavy foundation and intricate updos to hide that birthmark from high society.
She had always believed it was an ugly blemish on an otherwise perfect face.
Luca stood up slowly from his seat, towering over the table like an approaching storm.
He walked toward his bride, his heavy leather shoes clicking deliberately against the polished stone floor.
Vanessa looked up at him, her eyes wide with terror as Luca reached out with his right hand.
He gently brushed aside the cascading blonde curls resting against her neck.
There, perfectly visible beneath the bright chandelier light, was a dark, crescent-shaped birthmark.
A collective gasp echoed across the forty guests seated around the room.
"It's just a coincidence," Donna Bellini shouted frantically from across the table.
"Millions of children have birthmarks, Frank! You cannot ruin this alliance over a bedtime story!"
Luca turned his head toward Donna, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheek twitched.
"Sit down and shut your mouth, Donna," Luca growled, his voice dropping into a deadly register.
"Marco, seal the front gates and bolt every heavy mahogany door in this mansion."
"Nobody leaves this dinner until every lie in this family is torn out by the roots."

Four armed guards immediately racked their weapons and stood shoulder to shoulder before the main exit.
Vanessa sank to the floor, her lavish satin gown spreading around her like spilled cream, as the reality closed in.
