Chapter 4 - The Shattered Matriarch

Donna Bellini looked around the room, realizing that her armed bodyguards were completely surrounded by Luca’s loyal soldiers.
Her pristine, aristocratic composure cracked into a thousand jagged pieces.
"You think you can intimidate me in front of Chicago's elite, Luca?" Donna hissed, clutching her pearls.
"The Bellini syndicate controls half the shipping docks on the lake, and our allies will burn this house down!"
Frank stepped forward, his aged face hardened into a mask of pure, unyielding authority.
"Your brother Antonio controls the docks, Donna, but he does not control the ground beneath your feet right now."
"Forty years ago, my warehouse burned to the ground, killing eight of my closest associates."
"The police claimed it was an electrical fault, but Evelyn whispered a name to me before she collapsed outside."
Evelyn looked straight at Donna, her eyes burning with an intense, long-dormant fire.
"I saw your brother Antonio running from the rear alley with a gasoline container," Evelyn said clearly.
"He set that fire to murder Frank so the Bellinis could seize control of the South Side territory."
"When I dragged Frank out into the street, Antonio thought I was just an insignificant factory girl."
"He never realized I was carrying Frank’s unborn heir inside my womb."
Donna slumped into her high-backed chair, the arrogance draining completely from her posture.
"Antonio told me Frank was dead," Donna whispered, her voice finally breaking under the suffocating pressure.
"He swore Frank wouldn't survive the night in the hospital, and our family needed a way to claim the Moretti fortune."
"When my own pregnancy failed that same week, my late husband arranged the swap through our private clinic."
"We took the baby to hold as a future bargaining chip, never expecting Frank to wake up from his coma."
Vanessa let out a choked, ragged sob from the floor, clutching her head in her hands.
"You stole me?" Vanessa cried, looking up at the woman who had raised her with cold, merciless perfection.
"You let me spend my whole life believing I was a Bellini, while treating me like an investment portfolio?"
Donna looked down at Vanessa, her expression turning bitter and completely devoid of maternal warmth.
"You were an investment, Vanessa," Donna said coldly, without a single shred of remorse.
"We dressed you in French silk, sent you to Switzerland, and taught you how to smile at powerful men."
"The entire purpose of your existence was to marry into this family and hand their empire over to us."
The cruelty in Donna’s voice was so stark that several guests turned their heads away in disgust.
Claire Bennett stepped closer to Evelyn, placing a comforting, steady hand on the frail woman’s trembling shoulder.
Evelyn looked down at Vanessa, her heart breaking for the daughter who had been poisoned by forty years of greed.
Luca stepped between Donna and the rest of the table, his eyes darker than midnight.

"You used my father’s daughter as a weapon against him," Luca said, his voice deadly calm.
"And tonight, Donna, that weapon is going to dismantle your entire bloodline."
