Chapter 5 - The Heir of Choice

|

A terrified murmur began rippling through the wealthy guests seated along the long mahogany table.

One of the older syndicate capos cleared his throat nervously and leaned toward Frank Moretti.

"Frank, if Vanessa is your biological daughter, then what does that mean for this wedding?" the man asked quietly.

"Luca is your son. Are you telling us that Chicago's underboss was about to marry his own sister?"

The horror of the thought hung heavy in the air, causing several women to cover their mouths.

Luca turned around slowly, facing the guests with an expression of quiet, unshakable resolve.

"I am not Frank Moretti’s biological son," Luca declared, his clear voice commanding absolute silence.

The room gasped again, looking from Luca’s sharp Mediterranean features to Frank’s weathered face.

Frank stepped up beside Luca, placing a heavy, loving hand on the younger man's broad shoulder.

"Forty years ago, when the warehouse fire took Evelyn from me, I lost all desire to live," Frank explained.

"I believed my true love and my only unborn child were ashes scattered in the wind."

"Five years later, my most loyal lieutenant, Roberto Moretti, was murdered by rival cartels while protecting my life."

"Roberto left behind a six-year-old boy named Luca, who had nowhere else to go in this cruel world."

Frank’s eyes glistened with unshed tears as he looked up at the fearsome mafia boss standing beside him.

"I took that orphaned boy into my home and gave him my last name," Frank said softly.

"Luca is not the child of my blood, but he is the son of my heart, my soul, and my honor."

"He built this syndicate into what it is today, not through inheritance, but through sheer courage and loyalty."

Luca looked down at Frank, nodding with deep, unspoken gratitude for the man who had raised him as his own.

Vanessa looked up from the floor, her tear-stained eyes shifting between Luca and the scarred woman beside Claire.

"Then we aren't brother and sister?" Vanessa whispered, a desperate spark of hope flickering across her face.

"Luca, we can still go through with the ceremony. We can merge the empires and forget all of this madness!"

Luca looked down at Vanessa, his eyes completely devoid of warmth, affection, or mercy.

"You think this was ever about an empire, Vanessa?" Luca asked, his voice laced with bitter disgust.

"Ten minutes ago, an elderly woman walked into this room with hands ruined from saving my father’s life."

"She wore faded clothes, she was exhausted, and she was frightened of being hurt."

"Instead of offering her bread, you sneered at her scars and said she was disgusting your wealthy guests."

Luca shook his head, stepping backward until he stood beside the humble maid who had helped Evelyn sit down.

"You may carry Frank Moretti’s blood in your veins, Vanessa, but you have Donna Bellini’s black heart."

"This wedding is finished, and so is your place in this house."
