Chapter 12 - The Matriarch's Sentence

|

The damp warehouse was silent except for the muffled sobs of Vanessa and the desperate, ragged breathing of Julian Vance.

Luca pulled a silver revolver from inside his coat and held it out toward his mother, offering the grip.

"Say the word, Mom," Luca said, his voice steady and cold.

"Neither of them will ever see daylight again."

"The river is deep, and the current will take them out into the lake before sunrise."

Vanessa shrieked, burying her face in her hands.

"No! Please, God, no!"

Julian Vance closed his eyes, bracing for the inevitable execution.

Claire held her breath, watching Rosa Moretti closely.

She knew the power this family wielded; she knew that bodies disappeared in Chicago without a single headline.

Rosa looked at the revolver in her son’s hand.

Then, she slowly reached out her frail, silver-ringed hand and pushed the barrel gently downward.

"Put it away, Luca," Rosa commanded.

Luca frowned, surprised.

"Mom, they tried to kill you."

"They tried to steal everything Dad built."

"I know what they did," Rosa said, her voice resonant and unshakeable.

"And putting a bullet in their heads is an escape they do not deserve."

"A bullet takes one second."

"Death is painless, quick, and final."

"These two cowards value their social standing, their luxury, their clean suits, and their freedom more than life itself."

Rosa turned to Claire.

"Claire, give me the phone."

Claire handed Rosa an encrypted satellite phone.

Rosa dialed a number from memory.

After three rings, a deep, authoritative voice answered on speakerphone:

"Special Agent Hayes, United States Department of Justice."

Vanessa’s head snapped up in sheer horror.

Julian Vance’s eyes bulged with panic.

"Special Agent Hayes," Rosa spoke into the phone, her tone calm and businesslike.

"This is Rosa Moretti."

"Mrs. Moretti," the federal agent replied, his tone instantly respectful.

"It has been a long time since your husband passed.

To what do I owe this call?"

"I have the complete digital archives of the illegal conservatorship ring operating throughout Illinois," Rosa stated.

"I have the financial records, the offshore wire transfers, and audio confessions detailing the embezzlement of twelve million dollars."

"I also have Julian Vance and Dr. Alistair Finch's full participation records in corporate extortion and murder-for-hire schemes."

There was a heavy pause on the other end of the line.

"Where are the suspects, Mrs. Moretti?" Agent Hayes asked urgently.

"They are currently waiting for you inside Pier 42 at the South Water Street docks," Rosa replied.

"Come with enough handcuffs for six people."

"And bring the press."

"I want every news camera in Chicago to see what happens to predators who prey on the elderly."

Rosa ended the call and handed the phone back to Claire.

Julian Vance let out a hollow groan, collapsing completely onto the wet floor.

A federal indictment meant a minimum of forty years in ADX Florence with no possibility of parole.

Vanessa began clawing at her own hair, screaming hysterically as she realized she was traded from a mafia mansion to a federal penitentiary for the rest of her life.

Rosa looked down at Vanessa one final time.

"You wanted my money, Vanessa."

"Now, you can spend the next thirty years wearing orange jumpsuits, eating from plastic trays, and wondering how an old woman with 'dementia' outsmarted you."
