Chapter 6 - The Don's Widow

Claire returned to the study carrying an antique wooden box lined with faded purple velvet.
She placed it gently on the desk in front of Rosa.
Luca and Marco watched in silence as the elderly matriarch produced a small brass key from inside her locket.
She unlocked the box with a crisp click.
Inside lay no diamonds or gold necklaces.
Instead, there were three miniature audio cassettes, a black leather ledger, and an old military-grade USB drive.
"What is this, Mom?" Luca asked, picking up the small USB drive.
"Your father was a ruthless man, Luca, but he was never a fool," Rosa said, her fingers tracing the faded leather of the ledger.
"Ten years ago, before Gianni passed, Julian Vance was a junior partner at his father's law firm."
"He thought he was clever even back then."
"He attempted to embezzle two million dollars from our union pension funds."
Luca’s eyes widened.
"Dad never told me about this."
"Because your father handled it privately," Rosa replied.
"Gianni forced Vance to sign a full written confession."
"He also forced Vance to record audio statements admitting to money laundering, bank fraud, and three contract hits ordered by the old Valenti regime."
"Your father kept this leverage in his private safe as an insurance policy."
"He told me: 'Rosa, if Julian Vance ever tries to cross our family, don't shoot him.'"
"'Hand these files to the United States Attorney, and watch him drown under four life sentences.'"
Marco let out a low whistle.
"Boss, this doesn't just stop Vance's corporate takeover."
"This annihilates his entire legal career and puts the entire Valenti hierarchy behind federal bars."
Luca looked at his mother with profound admiration.
"You held onto this the whole time?"
"I held onto it because I knew the day would come when someone would try to exploit my age," Rosa said firmly.
"Vanessa thought that because my knees ache and my hands tremble, my mind had surrendered."
"She forgot that a mafia wife buries more secrets than any soldier."
Rosa turned her attention to Claire, her warm eyes softening with genuine affection.
"Claire, my dear."
"Yes, Mrs. Moretti?" Claire answered.
Rosa reached into the velvet box and pulled out a heavy gold chain bearing a pendant of genuine emeralds.
It had been a gift to Rosa from Gianni on their twenty-fifth anniversary.
Rosa lifted the chain and placed it around Claire’s neck before Claire could protest.
"Mrs. Moretti, I cannot accept this," Claire insisted, touching the cold stones.
"This is an heirloom."
"You saved my life, Claire," Rosa said softly, pressing Claire’s hands.
"If you hadn't swapped my tea, I would be in a comatose trance inside that forest sanitarium right now."
"My son would be fighting a war blindfolded."
"You are not just a member of the staff anymore."
"You are family."
Luca looked at Claire, his gaze intense and sincere.
"My mother does not give her trust easily, Claire."
"When she gives it, it is permanent."
"Now," Luca said, turning back toward Marco and the digital monitor.
"Whispering Pines is expecting Mrs. Moretti tomorrow morning at nine o'clock."
"Yes, Boss," Marco replied.
"They have a private transport van scheduled to pick her up from the service entrance."
Luca’s face hardened into an expression of ruthless resolve.
"We won't make them wait until morning."
"Marco, assemble eight of our best men."

"Claire, pack my mother’s medical overnight bag."
"We are going to pay Dr. Alistair Finch a surprise visit at midnight."
