Chapter 3 - The Toxicologist's Verdict

|

Dr. Nathan Sterling entered the sitting room carrying a heavy aluminum medical kit.

He was sixty years old, with sharp steel-rimmed spectacles and thirty years of experience handling the Moretti family's most confidential emergencies.

He took in the tense atmosphere with a single sweeping glance.

He did not ask questions; he simply set his case on the mahogany table and snapped open the latches.

"Luca," Dr. Sterling greeted quietly.

"Dr. Sterling," Luca said, handing over the two amber vials.

"Tell me what is inside these bottles."

"Then take a blood sample from my mother."

Dr. Sterling took a tablet out with stainless steel tweezers, placed it onto a testing dish, and crushed it into a fine powder.

He applied three distinct chemical reagents from tiny dropper bottles.

The powder hissed faintly and turned a violent shade of deep purple.

Sterling’s brow furrowed beneath his silver hair.

"This isn't a vitamin."

"It is an illicit high-potency derivative of Scopolamine blended with concentrated Haloperidol."

Claire gasped, instinctively stepping closer to Rosa's chair.

Rosa held Claire’s hand tightly, her skin cold as marble.

"Explain that in plain English, Doctor," Luca demanded, his voice low and dangerous.

"In clinical settings, these drugs are used in microscopic doses for severe psychiatric crisis," Sterling explained, adjusting his glasses.

"In uncontrolled doses, it induces severe retrograde amnesia, profound disorientation, and total emotional compliance."

"A person on this cocktail cannot formulate complex thoughts."

"They will sign any paper put in front of them simply to make the vertigo stop."

"Prolonged exposure over three months causes permanent neurological damage."

"Within another few weeks, it mimics end-stage Alzheimer's disease perfectly."

"And if the dosage is increased slightly?" Luca asked, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin.

"Cardiorespiratory arrest," Dr. Sterling replied without hesitation.

"The heart simply ceases to beat while the patient sleeps."

"Any standard coroner would write it off as natural heart failure brought on by advanced age."

The room fell into a suffocating quiet.

Rosa covered her face with both hands, letting out a ragged, heartbroken sob.

"She wanted me dead, Luca."

"She didn't just want the money."

"She wanted me buried in the ground."

Luca turned toward Vanessa with terrifying slowness.

Vanessa was pressed flat against the wall, her polished fingernails digging into the floral wallpaper.

"It's a lie!" she screamed, her voice cracking with hysterics.

"The doctor is in on it!"

"They’re all framing me because they hate that you married an outsider!"

Claire could not remain quiet any longer.

"Dr. Sterling, check the lower drawer of the tea cart in the pantry," Claire said firmly.

Luca glanced at me, his dark eyes demanding explanation.

"Go on, Claire," Luca ordered.

"Two weeks ago, I found three crushed pills inside Mrs. Moretti's porcelain sugar bowl," Claire revealed.

"Mrs. Moretti had whispered to me that her tea tasted metallic."

"I started swapping her morning and evening cups with plain chamomile whenever Vanessa wasn't looking."

"Mrs. Moretti would pretend to take sips, and then we would dump the poisoned tea into the potted ficus near the window."

Luca walked over to the tall ficus plant in the corner of the sitting room.

The lush green leaves on the side facing the window had withered into brittle, black husks.

The soil beneath it smelled faintly of bitter almonds and chemical sulfur.

Luca reached out and touched a dead leaf, watching it crumble into black dust between his fingers.

He turned back to face his wife.

"You tried to kill my mother in the very house my father built for her."

Vanessa dropped to her knees, the haughty arrogance finally shattering into raw terror.

"Luca, please!"

"I was under pressure!"

"I made a mistake!"

"We can fix this!"

"There is no fixing murder, Vanessa," Luca said softly.

"Marco, escort my wife to the basement wine cellar."

"Take her phone, her purse, and every piece of jewelry she is wearing."

"She does not see the sun again until I decide what she is worth."
