Chapter 13 - The Fall of the Untouchables

|
Within twenty-five minutes, the dark docks along South Water Street were illuminated by flashing red and blue lights.
Dozens of federal vehicles, Chicago police cruisers, and tactical vans sealed off the entire industrial park.
Luca Moretti’s men had already melted into the surrounding shadows, leaving Julian Vance, Vanessa, and the security contractors handcuffed to the warehouse pillars.
Claire stood beside Rosa inside the warmth of the black town car parked a block away, watching the spectacle unfold.
News vans from every major television network in the Midwest had already arrived, their satellite dishes raised toward the cloudy morning sky.
Dozens of reporters and cameramen swarmed the perimeter tape, flashing bright floodlights into the foggy gloom.
Special Agent Hayes personally escorted Julian Vance out of the warehouse.
The high-powered mob attorney had his head bowed, his tailored overcoat stained with oil, and his wrists locked in heavy iron cuffs.
Next came Vanessa Moretti.
The cameras flashed relentlessly, capturing every inch of her ruined elegance.
Her designer gown was ripped, her mascara was streaked across her cheeks, and she violently kicked at the ground as two female federal agents pushed her into the back of an armored transport van.
Luca stood beside his mother’s car window, watching the scene with cold satisfaction.
"Hayes has Finch's hard drive and Vance's confession," Luca told Rosa through the lowered glass.
"The U.S. Attorney’s office is unsealing twenty-four felony indictments by noon."
"They’re calling it the largest elder-fraud and conservatorship takedown in Illinois history."
Rosa smiled serenely, resting her hand on Luca’s arm.
"Good."
"Those vultures made millions putting defenseless grandparents into cages."
"Now the whole world knows their names."
Later that afternoon, the television in Rosa’s sitting room broadcast the official press conference.
The United States Attorney stood at the podium before a sea of microphones.
"Earlier this morning, federal authorities dismantled an elaborate criminal syndicate specializing in fraudulent conservatorships, elder exploitation, and grand larceny.
Among those arrested are prominent attorney Julian Vance, Dr. Alistair Finch of the Whispering Pines Sanctuary, and socialite Vanessa Moretti.
Over forty elderly victims have been identified and are currently being reunited with their rightful estates.
The investigation was made possible by the extraordinary courage and evidence provided by Mrs. Rosa Moretti and her dedicated household staff."
Claire watched the broadcast from the armchair beside Rosa, tears stinging her eyes.
For three months, she had lived in terror that she would wake up one morning and find Rosa dead in her bed.
She had endured Vanessa’s cruel insults, threats of termination, and constant surveillance.
Now, the truth was out in the open, blazing across every newspaper and social media feed in America.
Luca walked into the sitting room, holding a bottle of vintage champagne and three crystal flutes.
He poured three glasses and handed one to his mother and one to Claire.
"A toast," Luca said, raising his glass.
"To the matriarch who never broke."
"And to Claire, who saw the truth when everyone else looked away."
They clicked their glasses together, the crystal ringing clearly through the peaceful mansion.
Rosa took a delicate sip, then looked at Claire with warmth and pride.

"Now, my dear Claire," Rosa said with a radiant smile.
"It is time to fix this house once and for all."
