Chapter 14 - Rebuilding the House

|

One week after the arrests, the atmosphere inside the Moretti estate had transformed completely.

The dark, oppressive cloud that Vanessa had cast over the mansion was entirely gone.

Sunlight poured through the massive French windows, illuminating freshly cut flowers and clean marble floors.

The corrupt domestic staff members whom Vanessa had hired to monitor Rosa had been fired and replaced with loyal, vetted professionals.

Luca sat at the long mahogany dining table with his mother and Claire, surrounded by stacks of legal documents.

A team of legitimate estate attorneys and forensic accountants had spent the past five days untangling Rosa’s finances.

"All twelve million dollars have been fully restored to your private accounts, Mrs. Moretti," the lead attorney announced, closing his briefcase.

"The fraudulent conservatorship filings have been completely expunged by the Cook County Superior Court."

"Vanessa's name has been stripped from every trust, deed, and insurance policy."

"And the divorce proceedings have been finalized under the felony-forfeiture clause."

"She leaves this marriage with exactly zero dollars and twenty-five years in federal prison."

Rosa nodded with satisfaction.

"Thank you, counselors."

"You may leave us now."

The attorneys bowed respectfully and exited the dining hall, leaving Luca, Rosa, and Claire alone.

Luca pushed a heavy blue leather folder across the table toward Claire.

Claire looked at it, confused.

"What is this, Mr. Moretti?"

"Open it, Claire," Luca said gently.

Claire opened the folder and read the title on the first page:

THE ROSA MORETTI FOUNDATION FOR ELDER PROTECTION AND LEGAL ADVOCACY.

Claire scanned down the document, her eyes widening as she saw the financial endowment.

"Ten million dollars..." Claire gasped, looking up at Rosa.

"I don't need twelve million dollars to live out my remaining years, Claire," Rosa said softly, reaching across the table to hold Claire’s hand.

"Whispering Pines showed me that there are hundreds of elderly people in this city who do not have a son like Luca to protect them."

"They do not have a brave woman like you to swap their tea."

"They are trapped in facilities, forgotten by the world, while corrupt lawyers drain their life savings."

"This foundation will provide free legal defense, private investigators, and safe medical care for any senior targeted by fraudulent guardianships."

"That is incredible, Mrs. Moretti," Claire said, tears welling in her eyes.

"It will save countless lives."

"It will," Rosa agreed.

"And you are going to run it."

Claire froze, her breath catching in her throat.

"Me?"

"I am a maid, Mrs. Moretti."

"I don't have a law degree."

"You have something far more valuable than a law degree, Claire," Luca said, his voice deep and sincere.

"You have integrity."

"You looked at millions of dollars, a dangerous mafia family, and an abusive boss, and you chose to do what was right."

"You protected my mother when you had everything to lose and nothing to gain."

"The foundation needs an Executive Director who cannot be bought, intimidated, or fooled."

"That person is you."

Claire looked at the contract.

The position included a generous executive salary, a seat on the board of directors, and complete operational independence.

"I don't know what to say," Claire whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek.

"Say yes, my dear," Rosa said with a warm, maternal chuckle.

"And then let's have the chef prepare a proper Italian feast."

"We have a lot of lost time to celebrate."
