Chapter 7 - Midnight at Whispering Pines

|

The black convoy of three armored SUVs navigated the winding gravel roads through the Cook County forest preserve.

Tall pine trees blocked out the moonlight, casting jagged shadows across the damp pavement.

Claire sat in the back of the second SUV between Luca and Marco.

Her heart pounded in her chest, but she kept her face composed.

She had never seen the violent machinery of Luca Moretti’s world up close.

Yet seeing the quiet dignity of Rosa back at the mansion gave her an unexpected reservoir of courage.

"Are you frightened, Claire?" Luca asked quietly, his eyes scanning the tree line outside the tinted window.

"A little, sir," Claire admitted honestly.

"You don't have to go inside," Luca offered.

"You can wait in the vehicle with the driver."

"No," Claire said firmly, adjusting the collar of her dark coat.

"I want to see the face of the man who agreed to drug Mrs. Moretti."

Luca looked at her for a long moment, a faint smirk touching the corner of his lips.

"You have more spine than half the captains on my payroll."

The convoy rounded a final bend and stopped before an imposing set of black wrought-iron gates.

A wooden sign carved with gold lettering read: Whispering Pines Sanctuary - Peace, Dignity, Renewal.

Marco pulled out an electronic jamming device and activated it.

Instantly, the surveillance cameras mounted on the brick pillars flickered and went black.

Two of Luca’s men hopped out of the lead vehicle with hydraulic bolt cutters.

The heavy chain snapped with a dull metallic crack.

The gates swung open, and the three SUVs glided silently up the winding driveway toward a sprawling, three-story stone mansion.

The building looked more like a fortress than a medical clinic.

Heavy iron grates covered every ground-floor window.

A single security guard in a grey uniform sat behind a glass booth near the entrance, scrolling through his phone.

Before the guard could look up, Marco shattered the glass booth with the butt of his suppressed pistol.

The guard was disarmed, gagged, and cuffed to his chair in less than fifteen seconds.

Luca walked through the front double doors, his leather shoes clicking against the pristine linoleum floor.

The air smelled intensely of bleach, stale food, and heavy sedatives.

From down a long, dimly lit corridor, Claire could hear the faint, muffled weeping of an elderly woman.

Claire’s stomach churned with nausea.

This was not a hospital.

This was a human warehouse where greedy heirs paid to make their elderly relatives disappear from the world.

Luca stopped at the central reception desk.

A framed portrait of Dr. Alistair Finch hung on the wall, showing an arrogant man with slicked-back blonde hair and a condescending smile.

"Marco, check the basement and clear the security room," Luca ordered.

"Find Finch's private office," Luca commanded.

"And make sure he is still sitting in it."

A door at the end of the hall swung open, and a middle-aged doctor in a white lab coat emerged, holding a clipboard.

"What is the meaning of this commotion?" the doctor snapped, adjusting his gold wristwatch.

He froze mid-step as he saw six armed men in tactical gear standing in his lobby.

He looked at Luca’s face and immediately recognized the most dangerous man in Chicago.

The clipboard slipped from Finch's trembling fingers, clattering loudly against the cold floor.

"Mr. Moretti..." Finch stammered, his face turning paper-white.

Luca took three slow, deliberate strides toward him.

"Dr. Finch, I believe you are expecting my mother for a long-term visit."

"I came to deliver her paperwork in person."
