Chapter 11 - The Cleansing

|

The streets of New York bled over the next forty-eight hours.

Serena remained in her secure compound, monitoring the encrypted police scanners and the frantic fluctuations in the dark web markets.

Luciano’s strike against Rossi was swift, brutal, and meticulously calculated.

He didn't just assassinate the underboss; he systematically dismantled the entire trafficking infrastructure.

Safe houses were raided by Luciano’s loyalists, and terrified victims were quietly transported to Voss Strategic’s secure philanthropic medical facilities.

Serena personally oversaw the arrival of the rescued women, her heart breaking at the sight, cementing her resolve.

By the dawn of the third day, the war was over.

Luciano arrived at her office just as the sun crested the horizon.

He looked exhausted, a nasty cut sealing over his left eyebrow, his knuckles bruised and split.

He dropped a heavy, blood-stained ledger onto her desk.

“It’s done,” he rasped, collapsing onto the leather sofa in the corner of her office.

“The network is destroyed. The funds have been diverted to your foundation.”

Serena walked over to him, pouring a glass of water and handing it to him.

He took it, his fingers brushing hers, leaving a smear of dirt against her pristine skin.

She didn't flinch away this time.

Instead, she reached into her desk, retrieved a first-aid kit, and sat beside him on the sofa.

She cleaned the cut on his forehead in silence, the air between them thick with a profound, unspoken shift.

“You actually did it,” she murmured, wiping away the blood.

“I told you I would,” he replied, his dark eyes locking onto hers.

“You risked your entire empire for a demand I made,” she noted, searching his face for regret.

“I cleared the rot to build a stronger foundation,” he answered simply.

For the first time since she had walked out into the rain five years ago, Serena felt the ice around her heart begin to melt.

He had shattered her world, but he had just proven he was willing to shatter his own to make amends.
