Chapter 6 - The Falcone Threat

|

The threat materialized sooner than even Luciano had anticipated.

Serena was auditing a newly acquired shipping yard in Brooklyn when the atmosphere shifted.

The docks were normally bustling, but an eerie silence had fallen over the eastern sector.

Vance stepped in front of her, his hand resting casually inside his jacket.

From behind the stacked shipping containers, a dozen armed men emerged, wearing the distinct crest of the Falcone syndicate.

“Ms. Voss,” their leader sneered, stepping forward with a leveled weapon.

“Mr. Falcone sends his regards and politely requests you dissolve your contracts with the Morettis.”

“Tell Mr. Falcone I do not take business advice from men hiding behind metal boxes,” Serena replied, her voice projecting authority.

Gunfire erupted instantly, shattering the quiet afternoon.

Vance pushed her behind a heavy steel piling, returning fire with lethal precision.

Serena drew the compact firearm she had trained with for the past three years, her hands surprisingly steady.

She was not a helpless pawn waiting to be rescued.

Just as the Falcone men began to flank their position, the deafening roar of engines tore through the yard.

Luciano’s men descended like a violent tide, a coordinated strike that overwhelmed the attackers in seconds.

Through the chaos, Serena saw Luciano himself, moving with a terrifying, predatory grace.

When the gunfire ceased, the surviving Falcone men were dragged away into the shadows.

Luciano marched toward her, his chest heaving, his suit jacket discarded and his white shirt stained with someone else's blood.

“Are you hurt?” he demanded, grabbing her by the shoulders.

She shoved his hands away, furious at the adrenaline and the sudden, unwanted rush of relief.

“I had it under control,” she lied smoothly.

“You were outgunned and outmaneuvered,” he shouted, the mask of the composed mafia boss slipping completely.

“I lost you once because of my own arrogance, Serena. I will not lose you again to someone else’s.”

The confession hung in the air, thick and heavy with years of unspoken regret.

She looked at him, seeing the desperate man beneath the monster she had married.

“You didn't lose me, Luciano,” she whispered sharply.

“You threw me away. Do not confuse the two.”

She turned and walked to her car, leaving him standing amidst the wreckage.
