Chapter 5 - The Shadow Game

|

News of the partnership between Voss Strategic and the Moretti enterprise sent shockwaves through the criminal and corporate underworlds.

Serena knew the alliance was dangerous, but danger was a crucible that forged diamonds.

Luciano had become relentless in his attempts to bridge the chasm between them.

He sent gifts, not orchids this time, but rare first-edition books and encrypted drives containing actionable market intelligence.

She accepted the intelligence and returned the books untouched.

Late one Tuesday evening, as she was leaving a high-profile charity dinner, she noticed the black SUV tailing her town car.

She instructed her driver, a highly trained ex-military operative named Vance, to take the long route through Central Park.

“We have company, Ms. Voss,” Vance noted, his eyes on the rearview mirror.

“I see them,” she replied calmly, checking her reflection in the dark window.

Suddenly, a second vehicle surged from a cross street, boxing them in against the curb with a screech of tires.

Serena did not panic; she had prepared for the enemies Luciano’s proximity would inevitably bring.

Before Vance could draw his weapon, the doors of the blocking vehicle flew open.

It wasn't a rival syndicate; it was Luciano himself, stepping out into the harsh glare of the streetlights.

He walked to her window and tapped on the glass.

She lowered it an inch, the cool night air rushing into the cabin.

“This is highly dramatic, even for you,” she observed.

“The Falcone family knows we are working together,” he warned, his eyes scanning the shadows of the park.

“They view your company as an extension of my territory, which makes you a target.”

“My security is more than adequate,” she assured him coldly.

“Not against them,” he insisted, his voice laced with genuine fear—a sound she had never heard from him before.

“I am assigning Marcus and a detail to you.”

“I do not want your men shadowing me, Luciano.”

“It wasn't a request, Serena,” he said, his jaw tightening.

She rolled the window up in his face, signaling Vance to maneuver around his car.

As they drove away, she knew the game had escalated.

She wasn't just playing against Luciano anymore; she was playing against the entire board.
