Chapter 4 - The Revelation

|

The silence in the conference room stretched until it felt fragile enough to shatter.

Luciano’s eyes darted from the documents back to Serena’s face, tracing the sharp line of her jaw, the determined set of her mouth, and the fiery auburn of her hair.

The puzzle pieces, scattered by time and arrogance, suddenly slammed together with violent force.

The color drained from his face, leaving him looking unusually pale and entirely vulnerable.

“Serena,” he breathed, the name slipping past his lips like a ghost.

Marcus shifted at the door, startled by the sudden vulnerability in his boss's voice.

Serena did not flinch, did not smile, and did not offer him a single shred of comfort.

“My name is Serena Voss, CEO of Voss Strategic,” she replied, her voice ringing like struck steel.

“The woman you are thinking of ceased to exist the night she walked out into the rain with a single travel bag.”

Luciano stood up slowly, the leather chair scraping harshly against the floor.

“Five years,” he whispered, grappling with the impossible reality standing before him.

“You built this... all of this?”

“You told me I was compensated for my time,” she reminded him, throwing his own callous words back at him.

“I decided that two hundred and fifty thousand dollars was seed money, not a settlement.”

He took a step toward her, his expression a chaotic mix of shock, awe, and something terrifyingly close to regret.

“I thought you went back to Ohio,” he said, his voice raw.

“You didn’t think about me at all, Luciano,” she stated flatly, closing the folder on the table.

“Now, are we going to discuss the European logistics contract, or do you need a moment to collect yourself?”

For the first time in his life, the ruthless head of the Moretti family was completely outmaneuvered.

He stared at her, seeing not the naive girl he had discarded, but a queen who had forged her own crown.

“The contract,” he finally choked out, sinking back into his chair.

As they worked through the numbers, Serena felt the final, lingering chains of her past break away.

She had not just survived him; she had surpassed him.
