Chapter 13 - The Forgiveness

|

Months passed, and the empire they built became an impenetrable fortress.

But power without peace was merely a gilded cage, and Serena knew they had one final ghost to confront.

On the anniversary of their divorce, she drove to the Riverside Drive house.

Luciano still owned it, though it had been closed up and empty since the week she left.

She found him standing in the overgrown garden in the back, staring up at the window of the master suite.

He didn't look surprised to see her; they had developed a sixth sense for each other’s presence.

“I come here sometimes,” he admitted without turning around.

“To remind myself of the exact moment I ruined my life.”

Serena walked up beside him, wrapping her white coat tighter against the autumn chill.

“I used to hate this house,” she said honestly.

“It felt like a museum where I was the least valuable exhibit.”

Luciano closed his eyes, the words cutting him deeply, precisely because they were true.

“I am sorry, Serena,” he whispered into the wind.

“I have said it in a thousand different ways over the last year, but I need to say it simply.”

“I am sorry for the pain I caused you. I am sorry for not seeing you.”

She turned to look at him, seeing the raw, unguarded agony in his expression.

Forgiveness was not a switch to be flipped; it was a bridge built over time, and Luciano had carried every stone.

She reached out, threading her fingers through his.

“The girl you hurt died in that rainstorm,” she told him, her voice steady and clear.

“The woman standing before you doesn't need an apology for a life she outgrew.”

“But I forgive you, Luciano.”

He let out a breath that sounded like a sob, pulling her into a fierce, desperate embrace.

She wrapped her arms around him, resting her head against his chest, listening to the frantic beating of his heart.

In the shadow of the house that had broken them, they finally healed.
