Chapter 11 - A Fresh Canvas

|

Two weeks later, the downtown streets of Chicago were bustling with late autumn shoppers beneath a canopy of golden streetlights.

The grand conference room on the forty-second floor of the Moretti Tower had been completely transformed.

The dark mahogany walls and menacing syndicate trophies of the past had been replaced with bright modern art, floor-to-ceiling glass, and warm oak furnishings.

I sat at the head of the conference table, reviewing the architectural blueprints for the new Carter-Romano Community Health Center.

Funded jointly by the Moretti Foundation and Allison Romano’s restructured charitable trust, the center was designed to provide free orthopedic and pediatric care to low-income families on the South Side.

The glass door opened, and Allison walked in, wearing an elegant cream pantsuit, carrying a folder of contractor bids.

She looked radiant, vibrant, and years younger than the broken woman who had wept over her untouched dinner three weeks ago.

“Emily, you look absolutely radiant today,” Allison smiled, setting the folder on the table and giving me a warm hug.

“Hard work agrees with you.”

“It’s easy to work hard when you know it’s actually changing lives, Allison,” I replied, gesturing for her to take the seat beside me.

“The city council just approved the building permits for the primary clinic building this morning.”

“We break ground in three weeks.”

Allison sat down, her eyes shining with genuine pride and accomplishment.

“I still can't believe what we’ve built in such a short time,” she said, touching the architectural sketches.

“For seventeen years, I thought my only purpose was to be Adrian’s charming accessory at boring dinner parties.”

“Now, I wake up every morning with a purpose that belongs entirely to me.”

“You always had that strength inside you, Allison,” I said softly.

“You just needed to be free of the person who was making you feel small.”

Allison smiled knowingly, leaning her elbows on the table and tilting her head toward me.

“Speaking of men who change your world,” she teased gently, “how is my favorite mob boss handling your new independence?”

A blush crept up my neck, making me look down at the financial spreadsheets to hide my smile.

“Luca has been… remarkably supportive,” I admitted, trying to sound professional despite the flutter in my chest.

“He hasn't interfered with a single board decision, and he reviews every budget request within an hour.”

“He’s head over heels in love with you, Emily,” Allison said plainly, laughing at my flustered expression.

“The entire city knows it.”

“He shut down three illegal gambling dens on the West Side yesterday because they were located within five blocks of a public school.”

“The other bosses are terrified that Luca Moretti has developed a conscience.”

“He always had a conscience, Allison,” I said defensively, looking out the panoramic window overlooking the city skyline.

“He just never had a reason to let it lead him before.”

The private elevator in the corner of the executive suite chimed softly, its brushed steel doors sliding open.

Luca stepped out, dressed in an immaculate charcoal wool overcoat over his dark business suit.

He carried a single long-stemmed white rose in his hand, his eyes scanning the conference room until they landed squarely on me.

Allison immediately stood up, gathering her notes with an amused smirk playing across her lips.

“Well, that’s my cue to leave,” Allison announced, winking at me as she walked toward the doors.

“Good afternoon, Luca. Don't keep my Executive Director working too late—we have a budget review at nine tomorrow morning.”

“Good afternoon, Allison,” Luca replied with a respectful nod as she slipped through the door.

He walked over to where I sat, setting the white rose gently across the architectural blueprints.

“You look tired, Emily,” Luca murmured softly, his large hands resting on the high back of my leather chair.

“I’m not tired,” I smiled, looking up at him as he leaned down.

“I’m inspired.”

“Good,” Luca whispered, his lips grazing the sensitive skin beneath my ear, sending a delicious shiver down my spine.

“Because tonight, you are taking a break from saving the city.”

“I have a private dinner waiting for us on the lake, and this time, no one will be asking to take your plate away.”
