Chapter 12 - An Evening on the Water

The private yacht glided smoothly across the dark, glass-like waters of Lake Michigan, far away from the glowing neon skyline of Chicago.
The upper deck had been enclosed in transparent heated glass, offering a breathtaking three-hundred-and-sixty-degree view of the city’s illuminated towers.
Soft jazz music drifted from hidden speakers, mingling with the gentle, rhythmic hum of the twin engines.
A small dining table sat beneath a canopy of twinkling fairy lights, decorated with white lilies, silver candelabras, and crystal stemware.
I wore a backless midnight-blue velvet gown that Luca had sent to my penthouse earlier that afternoon, my dark hair pinned up with delicate pearl pins.
Luca sat across from me, looking devastatingly handsome in a black tuxedo with a crisp silk bow tie.
He poured two glasses of vintage sparkling water, raising his flute toward me with a quiet, reverent smile.
“To the woman who conquered Chicago without firing a single bullet,” Luca toasted, his eyes drinking in the sight of me.
I laughed softly, clinking my glass against his.
“I didn't conquer Chicago, Luca. I just helped balance a few crooked ledgers.”
“You brought down House Bellini, you freed Allison from a seventeen-year prison, and you built a healthcare network that will save thousands of children,” Luca countered, his voice filled with profound sincerity.
“In my world, that is called an empire.”
A discreet waiter in a white jacket served our dinner—pan-seared sea bass over lemon risotto—before bowing politely and disappearing below deck, leaving us in total privacy.
We ate in unhurried comfort, talking about everything from our childhood memories to our shared dreams for the city’s future.
For the first time since I met him, Luca spoke openly about his father’s passing, the immense weight of taking over the syndicate at twenty-five, and the loneliness that had consumed his life for a decade.
“I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe,” Luca admitted, swirling the water in his glass as he looked out at the glowing skyline.
“I surrounded myself with bodyguards, lawyers, and politicians who bowed whenever I entered a room.”
“Yet, every night when I returned to that twelve-bedroom mansion, it felt like an empty tomb.”
He set his glass down, reached across the small table, and took my hand into his warm, calloused palm.
“The night Vanessa tried to throw Allison out, I watched you stand in front of that table with your chin held high.”
“You were terrified, yet you refused to bend.”
“In that moment, I realized that true power isn't about how many men you can command to kill.”
“True power is having the courage to protect someone who has nothing to offer you in return.”
My heart swelled with an overwhelming wave of affection, my fingers tightening around his hand.
“You gave me the courage, Luca,” I whispered honestly.
“The second you stood up at that table and asked what was happening, I knew you were different from the stories people told about you.”
“You didn't protect Vanessa just because she wore your ring.”
“You demanded the truth, even when it cost you everything you had planned.”
Luca stood up from the table, gently tugging on my hand to pull me to my feet.
He led me to the edge of the glass terrace, where the reflection of the city lights danced across the dark water below us.
He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, pulling my back flush against his chest as the cool night wind whispered against the glass.
I leaned my head back against his shoulder, letting out a contented sigh as his chin rested lightly against my hair.
“I never want to let you go, Emily,” Luca murmured, his voice thick with raw, honest emotion.
“Then don't,” I replied softly, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck.

He kissed me then, deep, passionate, and filled with a tender desperation that made my knees weak.
Under the starry Chicago sky, surrounded by the glowing lights of a city he ruled and a future we were building together, I knew that my days of fear were gone forever.
