Chapter 14 - The Ring of True Loyalty

|

On Christmas Eve, the Moretti estate was filled with the warm, joyous sounds of music, laughter, and clinking glasses.

Unlike the tense, superficial engagement dinner of four months ago, tonight’s gathering was small, intimate, and authentic.

There were no corrupt syndicate bosses, no fake smiles, and no social climbers angling for favor.

Sitting around the grand dining table were the people who truly mattered: my mother, radiant and healthy in a red velvet dress; Allison Romano, glowing with independent confidence; Salvatore and his wife; and a dozen loyal staff members who had served the family for decades.

I had personally arranged the dinner, working alongside the kitchen staff to prepare a feast of roasted meats, fresh pasta, and homemade Italian desserts.

At the center of the table, gleaming under the chandelier, was a simple silver bowl filled with fresh pine needles, white roses, and twinkling candles.

As dessert was served, Luca stood up from the head of the table, tapping his crystal glass with a silver spoon.

The room immediately quieted, all eyes turning toward the man who had reshaped the destiny of everyone present.

Luca looked around the table, his gaze lingering on my mother, on Allison, and on his trusted staff with deep, heartfelt gratitude.

“Four months ago, this room was filled with thirty guests who claimed to be my friends,” Luca began, his rich baritone commanding the room with warmth.

“They smiled to my face, ate my food, and drank my wine, yet not a single one of them had the courage to speak up when cruelty was committed before their eyes.”

Allison smiled softly, looking down at her glass with quiet understanding.

“I thought I knew what loyalty meant,” Luca continued, his eyes drifting toward where I sat beside him.

“I thought loyalty was written into contracts, sworn in blood oaths, or bought with power.”

“Then, a twenty-five-year-old girl holding a silver serving tray showed me what real loyalty actually looks like.”

A collective murmur of warm agreement rippled through the guests as my mother smiled through tears of pride.

Luca turned to face me completely, stepping away from the head of the table and offering me his hand.

My pulse fluttered wildly as I placed my hand in his, letting him gently guide me to my feet.

“Emily,” Luca said, his voice softening into an intimate, breathtaking register that made the rest of the room disappear.

“You walked into my life when it was surrounded by lies and poison.”

“You stood beside Allison when she was defenseless.”

“You saved my life from an assassin’s chalice, and you gave my family a legacy that we can finally be proud of.”

He reached into the breast pocket of his tailored black suit jacket and pulled out a small, worn black velvet box.

The room held its breath as Luca dropped to one knee before me on the polished parquet floor.

He opened the box, revealing a breathtaking antique sapphire ring surrounded by a halo of brilliant, clear diamonds.

“This ring did not belong to my family,” Luca revealed, his eyes shining with raw, honest devotion.

“My family’s jewels were built on wars and broken treaties.”

“I had this designed from raw Montana sapphires—stones that represent truth, resilience, and unshakeable honor.”

Tears spilled freely down my cheeks, a hand flying to my mouth as my heart overflowed with pure joy.

“Emily Carter,” Luca whispered, looking up at me with every ounce of his soul laid bare.

“Will you do me the greatest honor of my life and become my wife?”

My mother wiped her eyes with a cloth napkin, and Allison let out a soft, joyful gasp.

I looked down at the man who had moved mountains to protect the people I loved, the man who had traded ruthlessness for honor.

“Yes, Luca,” I whispered, my voice trembling with happy tears.

“A thousand times, yes.”

Luca slid the sapphire ring onto my finger, its cool weight settling against my skin like an eternal promise.

He stood up, pulled me into his arms, and kissed me as a thunderous cheer erupted from everyone around the table.

My mother and Allison were on their feet, applauding and weeping with joy, while Salvatore raised a toast that echoed to the vaulted ceilings.

As Luca held me tightly against his chest, I looked down at my hand, sparkling under the golden chandelier, and knew that our new beginning had finally arrived.
