Chapter 10 - Whispers by the Water

The trail along the lake was peaceful, shaded by tall weeping willows whose golden leaves drifted lazily onto the calm surface of the water.
Luca walked beside me, his hands tucked into the pockets of his leather jacket, matching his long strides to my slower pace.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke, comfortable in a companionable silence that felt natural and unforced.
The cool breeze carried the fresh scent of pine and damp earth, a welcome contrast to the smoke and tension of the city.
“Your mother looks wonderful, Emily,” Luca broke the silence, glancing down at me with a soft smile.
“She told me you’ve been calling the clinic every night,” I said, looking up into his handsome face.
Luca paused for a second, a rare, faint trace of sheepishness crossing his rugged features.
“I wanted to make sure she was receiving the highest standard of care,” he replied defensively, clearing his throat.
“You didn't have to do that, Luca,” I said softly, stopping by a rustic wooden railing overlooking a secluded cove.
“You’ve already done far more for my family than anyone could ever expect.”
Luca stopped beside me, turning to lean against the railing so he was facing me completely.
“I did it because your family gave me something I thought was dead forever, Emily,” he said, his tone turning intensely serious.
“What do you mean?”
Luca looked out over the sparkling water, the memories of a lifetime of violence and betrayal reflecting in his dark eyes.
“When you grow up in my world, you learn very early that loyalty is an illusion bought with cash and fear,” he explained quietly.
“My father taught me to trust no one, not even my closest allies.”
“I thought Adrian was the exception.”
“I thought Vanessa was a practical, civilized partner who shared my vision for stability.”
He looked back at me, the raw vulnerability in his gaze stealing the breath from my lungs.
“When Vanessa demanded that you humiliate Allison that night, you were an underpaid maid who desperately needed your job.”
“You had every reason in the world to obey her, take that plate, and look the other way.”
“Instead, you stood in front of thirty billionaires and chose decency over survival.”
He stepped closer, his boots closing the small distance between us until I could feel the radiant warmth radiating from his broad chest.
“You showed me that real honor still exists in this world, Emily.”
“And from that exact moment, I knew I would tear down half of Chicago before I let anything happen to you.”
My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, my hand rising instinctively to touch the lapel of his leather jacket.
“I was terrified that night, Luca,” I confessed, looking up into his intense gray eyes.
“I was shaking so hard my knees could barely hold me.”
“Courage isn't the absence of fear, Emily,” Luca murmured, his large hand gently cupping the side of my face.
His calloused thumb stroked my cheekbone with breathtaking tenderness, sending shivers of warmth racing through my skin.
“Courage is standing your ground when your hands are shaking.”
“You are the bravest person I have ever known.”
He leaned down slowly, giving me every opportunity to step back or turn away, but I couldn't move an inch.
When his lips finally met mine, it was not the harsh, demanding kiss of a mafia don, but a tender, desperate declaration of devotion.
The world around us seemed to dissolve into the whispering wind and the gentle lap of waves against the shore.
I closed my eyes, my fingers curling into his jacket, leaning into the strength and safety of his embrace.
When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, his breathing was ragged and his eyes burned with fierce conviction.
“I am not an easy man, Emily,” Luca whispered against my lips.
“My life is surrounded by shadows and enemies.”
“But if you will let me, I will spend the rest of my days making sure you and your mother never have to be afraid of anything again.”
I looked at him, feeling a deep, unshakeable certainty settle into my soul.
May you like
“I’m not afraid of the shadows, Luca,” I replied softly.
“Not as long as you're the one standing beside me.”
