Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Moretti Estate

|

The steel door of the hidden safe room hissed shut, sealing Allison and me inside the reinforced bunker.

The room was equipped with live security monitors displaying every camera angle across the sprawling Moretti grounds.

Allison sat on a wooden bench against the concrete wall, clutching a silver rosary between her trembling fingers.

I stood glued to the central monitor, watching the dark, rain-swept courtyard through the infrared night-vision cameras.

Four unmarked vans had breached the perimeter, stopping beside the marble fountain where stone lions stood guard.

Dozens of masked men clad in black tactical gear spilled out, raising automatic rifles toward the mansion’s entrance.

At the front of the mercenary force stood Don Alberto Bellini himself, accompanied by three of his top enforcers.

Alberto had a radio pressed to his mouth, clearly barking orders to breach the heavy oak front doors with breaching charges.

“He’s going to kill everyone,” Allison whispered, staring at the screen in pure dread.

“Alberto Bellini doesn't leave survivors when he takes over a territory.”

“Look at the roofline,” I urged her, pointing toward the upper-left camera feed.

Along the parapets of the estate, shadows were moving with terrifying precision.

Luca had not fortified the doors; he had set a lethal, three-dimensional trap.

The moment the first mercenary stepped onto the front terrace, blinding stadium lights mounted to the mansion’s towers erupted into life.

The entire courtyard was instantly bathed in daylight, completely disorienting the invaders and blinding their night-vision goggles.

Before Alberto could order a retreat, gunfire erupted from the rooftops like a sudden summer thunderstorm.

Luca’s snipers opened fire with pinpoint accuracy, disabling the engines of the getaway vans in seconds.

Mercenaries scattered in panic, seeking cover behind marble statues and ornamental hedges as bullets chipped away the stone.

Then, the heavy front doors swung open from the inside.

Luca walked out onto the elevated stone porch, flanked by six of his elite guards, wielding a heavy automatic shotgun.

He didn't seek cover; he moved like an ancient warlord reclaiming his stolen soil.

“Alberto!” Luca’s voice boomed through the estate’s external speakers, cutting through the gunfire and the roar of the rain.

“Drop your weapons and face me like a man, or die in the mud like a dog!”

Alberto Bellini scrambled behind the stone fountain, his face contorted in frantic rage as he realized he had walked into a slaughterhouse.

“You disgraced my daughter, Moretti!” Alberto screamed back over the sound of ricocheting bullets.

“You ruined our family name in front of the entire city!”

“Your daughter disgraced herself when she plotted murder in my home!” Luca countered, firing two deafening rounds that shattered the fountain’s upper basin, sending shards of marble raining down onto Alberto’s men.

Within four brutal minutes, the firefight turned into an absolute route.

Outnumbered, outgunned, and outmaneuvered, the surviving Bellini mercenaries dropped their rifles into the mud and raised their hands in surrender.

Luca descended the wide stone steps, his shotgun lowered, his heavy combat boots splashing through the crimson-stained puddles.

He approached the fountain where Alberto Bellini knelt, disarmed and terrified, with two Moretti rifles pressed against the back of his neck.

On the monitor, I watched Luca tower over the man who had sought to destroy him.

Luca said something to Alberto that the external microphone couldn't catch, then motioned for his men to haul the fallen don away.

The courtyard was secured; the siege was over before it had even truly begun.

Ten minutes later, the mechanical lock of our safe room clicked, and the heavy steel door slid open.

Luca stood in the frame, his jacket drenched in rainwater, smoke still faintly clinging to his dark silhouette.

He lowered his gaze to where I stood, still clutching the small pistol he had given me.

When his eyes found mine, the terrifying ruthlessness on his face melted away into an expression of raw, profound relief.

“It’s over,” Luca said softly, his voice rough from the smoke and adrenaline.

“The house is secure.”

I set the weapon on the table, took three hurried steps forward, and before I could think about boundaries or propriety, I threw my arms around his neck.

Luca froze for a split second in surprise, then his powerful arms wrapped around my back, pulling me tightly against him.

He buried his face in the crook of my neck, breathing in the scent of my hair as the remaining tension drained from his body.

“You're safe, Emily,” he whispered against my ear, his voice trembling with an emotion he couldn't hide.

“I swore to myself I would keep you safe, and nothing in this city will ever touch you again.”
