Chapter 8 - The Syndicate Council

|

Three days later, the high-stakes drama shifted from the bullet-riddled estate to the polished marble halls of the Drake Hotel downtown.

The Grand Ballroom had been reserved for an emergency assembly of the Five Families of the Midwest Syndicate Council.

Every street boss, freight lord, and union controller had flown into Chicago under a strict truce to witness the reckoning of the Bellini betrayal.

I stood beside Luca in the private anteroom, wearing a tailored navy silk dress and a delicate silver pendant he had gifted me that morning.

My heart pounded as I reviewed the thick financial audits and encrypted manifests we were about to present to the council.

“Are you ready for this, Emily?” Luca asked, checking the gold cufflinks on his crisp white shirt.

“I know the numbers, Luca,” I replied, taking a steadying breath.

“Every stolen dollar and every illicit shipment is documented with bank confirmation stamps.”

“They won't be able to deny a single charge.”

Luca turned to me, placing both hands on my shoulders, his dark eyes radiating absolute pride and confidence.

“You are the smartest woman in this city,” he whispered, his thumb brushing against the base of my throat.

“Do not be intimidated by the men in that room.”

“They wear expensive suits, but most of them are cowards who bow to whoever holds the truth.”

The double mahogany doors swung open, and Salvatore, Luca’s primary lieutenant, signaled that the council was seated.

Luca offered me his arm, and together we walked into the grand ballroom.

Dozens of hardened men in dark suits sat around a massive U-shaped conference table, their expressions grim and watchful.

At the far end of the room, flanked by two armed neutral arbiters, sat Don Alberto Bellini and his daughter Vanessa.

Vanessa wore a plain black dress, stripped of her diamond jewelry and designer accessories, her face pale, sunken, and hollow.

When her eyes met mine, a flicker of pure, venomous hatred crossed her features, but she quickly lowered her head under the heavy gaze of the council.

Don Vincenzo Falcone, the eighty-year-old chairman of the council, struck the gavel against the oak sounding block.

“The emergency assembly of the Midwestern Commission is called to order,” Falcone announced, his raspy voice commanding total silence.

“Don Luca Moretti brings charges of high treason, attempted assassination, and unauthorized cartel distribution against House Bellini.”

“Moretti, present your evidence.”

Luca stepped forward to the center podium, his presence commanding the entire room without raising his voice.

“Gentlemen,” Luca began, gesturing toward the projector screen behind him.

“My family has honored the Chicago treaties for four generations.”

“We shared our ports, we maintained peace with the authorities, and we protected our mutual trade lines.”

“Don Alberto Bellini sought to dismantle that peace through murder.”

Luca turned toward me, extending his hand.

“Miss Emily Carter, Executive Director of the Moretti Foundation and chief financial analyst on this inquiry, will lay out the forensic trail.”

A murmur of surprise rippled through the old-fashioned bosses as I stepped up to the podium, opening my leather binder.

For five seconds, the weight of their scrutiny pressed heavily against my chest, but then I looked at Luca, who stood beside me like an immovable fortress.

I cleared my throat and began speaking, my voice clear, precise, and completely unwavering.

For twenty minutes, I systematically dismantled House Bellini piece by piece.

I walked the council through the Swiss shell accounts, the falsified grain manifests, and the illicit transactions with the eastern cartel.

I projected the signed confession from Dr. Vance, the corrupt pharmacist who had prepared the neurotoxin for the vintage chalice.

When I finished reading the final wire transfer timestamp showing Vanessa’s personal signature authorizing the purchase, the room fell into dead silence.

Don Falcone looked at the documents, then turned his gaze toward Alberto Bellini with utter disgust.

“Alberto,” Falcone spoke, his voice heavy with ancient finality.

“Do you have anything to say in your defense?”

Alberto opened his mouth, but looking around the room at the stony, unforgiving faces of his peers, he slowly lowered his head in defeat.

Falcone struck the gavel once more, the sound cracking like thunder through the ballroom.

“By unanimous consensus of the Five Families, House Bellini is stripped of all titles, territories, and syndicate protections,” Falcone declared.

“Their distribution contracts are hereby transferred entirely to House Moretti.”

“Alberto and Vanessa Bellini will be remanded to the custody of federal authorities with all accompanying financial evidence.”

Vanessa screamed as federal marshals waiting outside the hall entered and snapped handcuffs around her wrists.

“Luca! Please!” Vanessa shrieked as she was dragged toward the exit, tears ruining what remained of her composure.

“I loved you! I did it for our future!”

Luca did not even look at her; his eyes remained fixed on the council, cold and untouchable.

As the doors closed on her screams forever, the bosses stood up one by one, raising their glasses in a formal salute to Luca Moretti and the brilliant woman standing at his side.
