Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

|

Within twenty minutes of my discovery, the quiet luxury of the Moretti estate transformed into an armed garrison.

Armored SUVs idled quietly under the stone portico, their headlights switched off to conceal their presence in the dense fog.

Heavy iron shutters descended over every window on the ground floor with a mechanical screech that made my stomach twist.

Men in Kevlar vests and tactical gear moved through the hallways with practiced, lethal efficiency.

I stood in the library clutching my phone to my ear, my heart pounding as I listened to the dial tone.

“Mom?” I blurted out the second she answered, her voice groggy from sleep.

“Emily, sweetie? What’s wrong? It’s three in the morning,” she murmured, coughing softly.

“Listen to me very carefully, Mom,” I said, keeping my voice firm despite the panic threatening to choke me.

“Two men are going to knock on your door in five minutes.”

“Their names are Marco and Paul, and they work directly for Mr. Moretti.”

“You have to pack your medication and let them escort you to a secure clinic outside the city.”

“Emily, you’re terrifying me! What kind of trouble are you in?”

“I’m safe, Mom, but I need you to trust me,” I pleaded, tears stinging my eyes.

“Mr. Moretti is taking care of your surgery expenses and your safety, but you have to leave that apartment right now.”

A heavy hand rested gently on my shoulder, warm and remarkably steadying.

I turned to find Luca standing behind me, dressed in a black tactical jacket, a radio transmitter clipped to his collar.

He gently took the phone from my hand and placed it to his ear.

“Mrs. Carter,” Luca spoke into the receiver, his tone polite, respectful, and completely composed.

“This is Luca Moretti.”

“Your daughter is safe, and she has just saved my life.”

“My private medical transport is outside your building right now with two registered nurses.”

“I give you my personal word as a Moretti that you will be housed in complete safety and comfort until this matter is resolved.”

Whatever my mother said on the other end, it made Luca nod in quiet approval.

“Thank you, Mrs. Carter. We will see you soon.”

He ended the call, handed the phone back to me, and looked down at my pale face.

“Your mother is on her way to our private medical compound in Lake Geneva,” Luca said softly.

“She has her own suite, a full surgical rehabilitation team, and an armed perimeter that an army couldn't penetrate.”

Relief washed over me so violently that my knees actually gave out.

Luca’s arm shot out instantly, his strong hand catching me around the waist before I could hit the carpet.

For a breathless moment, I was pulled against his broad chest, close enough to feel the steady, thunderous beat of his heart.

His eyes locked onto mine, searching my face with an intensity that made the surrounding danger vanish entirely.

“You shouldn't have had to carry this burden alone, Emily,” he murmured, his voice softer than I had ever heard it.

“Working to pay for her care, taking abuse from women like Vanessa just to keep a roof over her head.”

“I did what any daughter would do,” I whispered, acutely aware of the warmth of his hand resting against my side.

Luca slowly helped me regain my footing, but his gaze never wavered.

“A good daughter, yes,” he said, stepping back just an inch.

“And a remarkably courageous woman.”

Suddenly, the radio on his collar crackled with static, shattering the intimate quiet of the library.

“Boss,” Marco’s gruff voice came through the speaker.

“Thermal perimeter sensors just tripped along the southern treeline.”

“Four black tactical vans with no plates just entered the outer estate gates.”

Luca clicked the transmitter, his jaw tightening into pure stone.

“Lock the inner perimeter,” Luca ordered without hesitation.

“Do not fire until they cross the fountain courtyard.”

“Let them think they caught us sleeping.”

He turned to me, pulling a small, sleek pistol from his belt and pressing it firmly into my hand.

“Stay in the reinforced safe room behind my desk with Allison,” Luca instructed, his thumb gently brushing across my knuckles.

“No matter what you hear outside, do not open that door until you hear my voice.”

I gripped the cold steel of the weapon, looking into the eyes of the man who had just risked his empire to protect my family.

“Come back alive, Luca,” I said, the words slipping from my mouth before I could stop them.

A faint, lethal smile touched the corners of his lips.

“They are stepping into my home, Emily,” Luca replied softly.

“They won't be the ones walking out.”
