Chapter 2 - The Hallway of Shadows

|

The Grand Regency’s service staircase smelled of industrial wax and stale lavender perfume.

Marcello climbed each step with a deliberate, suffocating slowness that made the air feel thin.

Behind him, Elena held Lily against her hip, feeling the frantic flutter of the child’s heartbeat against her ribs.

Camille followed last, her fuchsia gown rustling violently with every frantic stride.

Her heels clicked against the concrete steps like the ticking of a countdown nobody had asked to hear.

Two private security guards trailed behind them, their faces stone-cold beneath the harsh fluorescent lights.

The laughter and orchestral music from the ballroom below faded into a muffled, hollow drone.

Lily tucked her face into the crook of Elena’s neck, overwhelmed by the sudden swarm of tall adults.

Elena whispered soothing nonsense into her daughter’s curls, but her own hands were trembling.

She had spent three years keeping her head down, serving canapés to billionaires and avoiding eye contact.

Now, she was walking beside the city’s most formidable real estate magnate toward an impending disaster.

Marcello pushed open the heavy steel fire door at the third-floor landing.

This floor housed the luxury green rooms, VIP suites, and private bridal dressing quarters reserved for major foundation benefactors.

The carpeted hallway stretched out in absolute silence under recessed amber lamps.

Marcello turned to Lily, softening his posture so he did not tower over her.

He pointed down the wide corridor lined with heavy mahogany doors.

Lily lifted her head and pointed her small finger toward Suite 304, the private suite assigned to Camille for the gala.

Camille rushed forward, her painted nails digging into the silk sleeve of Marcello’s tailored tuxedo jacket.

She looked up at him with wide, glistening eyes, trying desperately to summon tears of wounded dignity.

She told him this was an unspeakable humiliation that would destroy her reputation and his family’s public standing.

She asked him how he could humiliate his future wife in front of hotel staff and catering help over a toddler’s fairy tale.

Marcello did not pull away, but he looked down at her hand until she felt forced to drop it.

He asked her quietly why her fingers were shaking if the child was only telling a fairy tale.

Camille’s jaw worked, but no sound escaped her throat.

Marcello walked straight to the door of Suite 304 and gripped the heavy brass lever.

The lock was disengaged, the latch sliding open without resistance.

Marcello shoved the door open, revealing the cavernous, opulent dressing room inside.

A vanity mirror surrounded by bright white bulbs lit up the center of the room.

Garment bags hung from a brass rolling rack, their plastic zippers swaying slightly in the draft.

A half-empty glass of sparkling mineral water sat beside a scattered collection of lip glosses and powder compacts.

Yet the room felt freshly disturbed, as though someone had just dashed through it in a blind hurry.

A coat hanger was still swinging gently inside the open cedar wardrobe in the corner.

Lily wiggled in Elena’s arms, asking to be put down on the thick plush carpet.

Elena hesitated, but Marcello gave her a nod that promised complete protection.

The little girl ran straight toward the heavy vanity table in the center of the room.

She pointed directly beneath the pleated silk skirt draping the vanity stool.

Elena gasped when she saw what was caught beneath the wooden leg of the stool.

A thick band of clear silicone was pinned against the floorboards, torn from its reinforced seam.

Beside it lay a discarded strip of heavy-duty, medical-grade body adhesive.

Marcello knelt down, his long fingers closing around the cold, flesh-toned synthetic material.

He lifted it into the harsh glare of the vanity lights.

It was the reinforced anchor strap of a custom prosthetic maternity belly.

The room plunged into an icy, suffocating silence that made Elena’s ears ring.

Marcello slowly turned his head to look at Camille.

May you like

His voice came out in a low, terrifying whisper that sounded colder than ice.

He asked Camille to explain why her pregnancy had an adjustable buckle.
