Chapter 9 - The Media Smear

|
The morning sun rose over Manhattan, but inside the penthouse, the atmosphere felt like a war room under siege.
Every major news network and social media platform was broadcasting the fabricated narrative orchestrated by the Avery PR machine.
Television anchors displayed photographs of Camille weeping inside her father’s limousine, wearing oversized sunglasses to conceal nonexistent bruises.
The articles claimed that Marcello had suffered a paranoid psychotic break at the gala, terrorizing his pregnant fiancée over delusional suspicions.
Senator Avery appeared live on a morning news broadcast, his face a portrait of righteous, paternal indignation.
The senator declared that his daughter was resting under heavy sedation to prevent a miscarriage caused by Marcello’s violent outbursts.
He publicly called on the DeLuca Holdings board of directors to remove Marcello immediately to protect the company and the public.
Worse, the tabloids had managed to obtain a blurry security photo of Elena carrying Lily through the service hallway.
The articles described Elena as an opportunistic catering worker whose coached child had been used in a bizarre corporate extortion plot.
Elena stared at the television screen in the kitchen, her face pale and her hands trembling with helpless fury.
She had spent her life trying to remain invisible, and now her innocent three-year-old child was being branded as a blackmailer’s prop.
Lily sat on the floor playing with wooden building blocks, blissfully unaware that millions of strangers were dissecting her existence.
Marcello walked into the room, dressed in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit that radiated cold, executive authority.
He pressed a remote control, shutting off the television wall and cutting off the senator’s booming voice instantly.
He walked over to Elena and took both of her shaking hands into his own, his grip steady, warm, and reassuring.
He told her to look at him, promising that the media storm was merely the dying thrash of a wounded beast.
He swore that he would not let the Avery family or Julian Croft drag her name or Lily’s innocence through the mud.
His chief PR strategist, a fierce woman named Diana Kelly, entered the kitchen clutching an iPad showing plunging stock tickers.
Diana reported that DeLuca Holdings stock was down seven percent in pre-market trading, and two major institutional investors were panicking.
Julian Croft had called for an extraordinary shareholder vote at ten o'clock the following morning to install an interim chief executive.
Diana insisted that Marcello needed to issue a public apology or produce undeniable physical evidence of Camille’s deception before the opening bell.
Without the missing blue duffel bag containing the prosthetic belly and forged medical files, the public would believe the senator’s lies.
Marcello’s team had spent all night searching the Grand Regency’s dumpsters, but the hotel’s waste compactors had already been emptied.
Elena looked up suddenly, a spark of memory flashing across her tired eyes as she listened to Diana describe the hotel’s layout.
She remembered the underground logistics of the Grand Regency from her three years working the catering circuit.
She told Marcello that the main service compactor on the east side had been out of order for mechanical repairs since last Thursday.
All banquet waste and discarded laundry were being routed through an older, abandoned maintenance chute in the sub-basement.

She knew that only the veteran immigrant kitchen staff and maintenance workers knew how to access that hidden chute.
Elena pulled out her personal phone, telling Marcello that she had friends in the hotel’s service basement who knew where every secret was buried.
