Chapter 11 - The Basement Ambush

|

The sub-basement of the Grand Regency was a labyrinth of exposed pipes, roaring ventilation ducts, and concrete pillars.

Steam hissed from overhead pressure valves, creating a ghostly haze that drifted beneath the dim yellow hanging bulbs.

Marcello, Elena, and Frank Vance entered through an unmarked freight delivery tunnel, their footsteps muffled by the roar of the boilers.

Elena led the way through the narrow corridor, recognizing the painted yellow safety lines that led to Hector’s workshop.

Up ahead, near the heavy steel door of Workshop B, three men in dark tactical jackets were using a motorized crowbar to pry the lock.

One of the men was Julian Croft’s personal fixer, an ex-mercenary named Miller who had handled dirty corporate operations for decades.

Hector’s muffled, terrified voice could be heard shouting from inside the workshop, swearing he had already called the police.

Miller snarled an obscenity, ordering his men to bypass the hinges with a blowtorch if the crowbar failed to crack the steel frame.

Frank Vance stepped into the corridor, raising his weapon and ordering the three men to step away from the door with their hands visible.

Miller whipped around, reaching for a weapon concealed beneath his jacket, but Marcello’s team moved with military precision.

Frank’s operatives rushed forward, tackling the two henchmen against the concrete wall and disarming them in three brutal seconds.

Miller attempted to swing a heavy iron pry bar at Frank, but Frank sidestepped the blow and swept Miller’s legs out from beneath him.

Miller crashed onto the wet concrete floor, groaning in agony as Frank pinned his wrist behind his back and snapped steel cuffs into place.

Marcello walked up to Miller, looking down at the groveling fixer with cold, unblinking disdain.

Marcello told Miller that his career as an extortionist was officially over, and that state prosecutors were already drafting his indictment.

Elena stepped past the subdued goons and knocked three times in a specific rhythmic sequence on the heavy steel door.

She called out in Spanish, telling Hector that it was Elena Morales and that Marcello DeLuca had brought security to protect him.

The heavy deadbolts slid back, and the steel door opened slowly to reveal Hector holding an iron pipe like a baseball bat.

The older man wept with relief when he saw Elena, dropping the pipe and pulling her into a brief, trembling hug.

Hector pointed toward the metal storage locker in the corner of the workshop.

Resting inside was the bright blue nylon duffel bag, zipped shut and covered in a faint layer of dust from the laundry chute.

Frank brought the bag out to the workshop table, using a pair of sterile latex gloves to slowly pull the brass zipper open.

Elena and Marcello leaned in, watching the contents spill onto the metal surface under the harsh workshop light.

Inside was the complete, professional silicone prosthetic pregnancy bump, perfectly contoured with medical-grade adhesives intact.

Beside it lay an encrypted burner phone, along with a stack of pre-signed ultrasound scans from a private clinic in Queens.

Attached to the ultrasound scans was a handwritten ledger detailing two hundred thousand dollars in kickbacks to a corrupt ultrasound technician.

Most damning of all was a notarized adoption contract for an unborn child from an overseas agency, scheduled for delivery in April.

The entire grotesque conspiracy was laid bare on the metal table, fully documented, signed, and preserved.

Marcello picked up the burner phone, seeing three unread messages from Julian Croft instructing the clinic to destroy their digital backups.

Marcello looked at Elena, his eyes burning with triumphant fire as he realized the nightmare was finally turning into retribution.

He declared that it was time to attend the emergency board meeting and end this war once and for all.
