Chapter 4 - The Erased Footage

|

Emergency backup lights buzzed to life along the baseboards, casting long, eerie shadows across the luxury suite.

Elena pulled Lily tightly into her arms, backing into the safest corner of the room behind Marcello’s broad shoulders.

Marcello did not flinch; he immediately stood in front of Elena and Lily, his body acting as an impenetrable wall.

Frank drew his service weapon halfway from his shoulder holster, his eyes scanning the shadowed hallway outside the open door.

The comms unit in Frank’s ear crackled with frantic static before his deputy’s voice broke through the speaker.

The deputy reported that the main security breaker for the north wing had been intentionally tripped from the basement panel.

Worse, the digital video recorders covering the third-floor corridor had suddenly stopped recording ten minutes ago.

Someone with administrative override codes had wiped the local cache and overwritten the surveillance hard drives.

Marcello’s jaw tightened until the muscles in his cheek looked like corded steel.

Only four people in the entire world possessed the master biometric codes to the DeLuca security architecture.

Marcello himself, his late grandfather, his ailing father Arthur, and Julian Croft, the chief legal counsel of DeLuca Holdings.

The realization struck Marcello with the force of a physical blow.

Julian Croft was the silver-haired man who had been whispering to Camille at the base of the grand staircase.

Julian had not simply left the ballroom to make a phone call; he had orchestrated a corporate extraction of the incriminating evidence.

Camille was still on the floor, but the panicked sobbing had stopped the instant the lights failed.

A faint, smug confidence seemed to creep back into the corners of her carefully lined mouth.

She knew that without the blue duffel bag, the torn silicone strap was merely circumstantial gossip that her father’s lawyers could bury.

Her father was Senator Thomas Avery, a political heavyweight with deep ties to the federal judiciary and media empires.

Between Julian Croft’s legal maneuvering and Senator Avery’s political muscle, they could frame this entire incident as catering slander.

Marcello turned to Frank, his voice deadly quiet and entirely devoid of panic.

He instructed Frank to seal the executive parking garage and place Julian Croft on an immediate personal watch list.

Frank slipped into the hallway, his boots making no sound against the thick runner as he moved toward the service elevators.

Marcello closed the suite door, leaving Camille sitting in the dim glow of the amber emergency floor strips.

He walked over to Elena, his intense dark eyes softening with genuine concern as he looked at her pale face.

He apologized to her for placing her and Lily in the path of such dangerous, ruthless people.

Elena shook her head, holding Lily closer and feeling the child’s small hands clutching her catering apron.

She told Marcello that she was not afraid of the truth, but she was terrified of what powerful men did when their secrets were exposed.

She admitted that she had seen enough of the world to know that women like her usually paid the price for rich people’s crimes.

Marcello took a slow breath, his gaze shifting to little Lily, who was watching him with wide, trusting eyes.

He promised Elena on his mother’s memory that no harm would come to either of them for speaking the truth tonight.

He told her that she was no longer just an employee at a benefit; she was the only honest witness in a den of vipers.

Elena looked down at the torn silicone strap still resting on the vanity table, realizing their lives had changed forever.
