Chapter 5 - The Heirloom Trap

|

Marcello led Elena and Lily through a private service corridor that bypassed the chaos of the Grand Regency lobby.

They entered an executive lounge hidden behind mirrored panels, a quiet sanctuary furnished with leather armchairs and mahogany bookshelves.

Marcello locked the heavy door from the inside and engaged the secondary deadbolt with a brass key from his pocket.

He opened a small refrigerator behind the bar and poured a glass of cold apple juice, kneeling down to offer it to Lily.

Lily took the glass with both hands, whispering a shy thank-you before taking a long, thirsty drink.

Marcello offered Elena a seat on the leather sofa, sitting opposite her with his elbows resting on his knees.

Elena looked around the luxurious room, feeling painfully out of place in her stained catering apron and flat nonslip shoes.

She asked him why Camille would go to such monstrous lengths to pretend to carry his child.

She pointed out that faking a pregnancy in the age of modern medicine and public scrutiny seemed like madness.

Marcello leaned back, rubbing the bridge of his nose as the exhaustion of the evening finally caught up to him.

He explained that the deception was never about love or vanity; it was entirely about corporate survival and billions of dollars.

His grandfather, the patriarch who built DeLuca Holdings from a small shipping line into an empire, had drafted an archaic family trust.

The trust stipulated that Marcello would inherit fifty-one percent of the voting shares only if he produced a legitimate heir by his fortieth birthday.

Marcello was turning forty in less than four weeks, and the deadline had loomed over his family for an entire year.

If Marcello remained unmarried and without an heir, the voting control of the empire automatically transferred to the executive board.

The executive board was chaired by Julian Croft, who represented an aggressive consortium of private equity vultures.

Julian’s faction wanted to dismantle DeLuca Holdings, sell off its heritage assets, and lay off tens of thousands of workers for quick profits.

Marcello had agreed to marry Camille because her family had been longtime friends of his father, and the union seemed logical.

When Camille announced she was pregnant five months ago, the board’s rebellion had collapsed overnight, securing Marcello’s leadership.

Marcello looked at Elena with bitter clarity, admitting that he had been blind because he desperately wanted the crisis to be solved.

Camille and Julian had formed a secret alliance to secure the shares, intending to control the DeLuca empire through the fabricated child.

Elena felt a chill run down her spine as the immense scale of the conspiracy became clear to her.

This was not a petty lovers' quarrel; it was a multi-billion-dollar coup that Lily had accidentally unraveled with five innocent words.

Lily set her empty juice glass on the table and climbed into Elena’s lap, yawning softly against her mother’s chest.

Elena stroked her daughter’s dark hair, knowing that Julian Croft and Camille would stop at nothing to silence them.

She asked Marcello what would happen when the board realized the heir did not exist.

Marcello looked at Lily with an expression of fierce, protective determination that surprised Elena.

He told her that tomorrow morning, Julian Croft would attempt to seize the company by claiming Marcello had lost his mind.

He added that the only thing standing between the DeLuca legacy and utter destruction was the courage of a three-year-old girl.
