Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Reckoning

|

The forty-fourth floor of DeLuca Holdings Tower was an expanse of frosted glass, polished teakwood, and silent tension.

Twenty-four board members sat around the sixty-foot mahogany conference table, their expressions grave and nervous.

At the head of the table sat Julian Croft, wearing a pristine new suit and projecting an aura of righteous corporate authority.

Beside Julian sat Senator Thomas Avery, looking stern and imposing, his presence alone intimidating several elderly board members.

Camille sat in the center of the room, dressed in mourning black, an embroidered handkerchief clutched to her eyes as she sniffled quietly.

Julian tapped his silver pen against the microphone, announcing that the emergency session to strip Marcello DeLuca of executive power had begun.

Julian argued that Marcello’s public breakdown had wiped out three hundred million dollars in shareholder value in less than twelve hours.

He declared that Marcello was mentally unfit to lead the corporation and demanded the immediate transfer of voting control to his committee.

Senator Avery cleared his throat, adding that his family would drop criminal assault charges only if Marcello stepped down without resistance.

Several board members nodded solemnly, terrified of the negative press and eager to appease the powerful senator.

Before Julian could call for the official roll-call vote, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with an authoritative bang.

Marcello DeLuca walked into the room, his stride confident, his posture commanding, and his presence commanding total silence.

Behind him walked two senior detectives from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division, their badges flashing in the light.

Elena Morales walked beside them, dressed in a tailored navy pantsuit Marcello’s team had provided, her head held high with quiet pride.

Julian Croft stood up abruptly, his voice rising in panic as he demanded that security remove the intruders from a private executive session.

Marcello ignored him entirely, walking straight to the head of the table and slamming the blue nylon duffel bag onto the polished mahogany.

The heavy thud resonated through the silent boardroom like a gunshot.

Marcello connected a small flash drive to the central presentation console, tapping the tablet to activate the massive wall displays.

The fifty-foot video wall lit up with high-definition digital photographs of the custom silicone prosthetic bump lying inside the duffel bag.

Gasps of shock erupted around the table as board members leaned forward, staring at the synthetic belly and its identifying serial numbers.

Marcello switched the display to show the recovered burner phone messages between Julian Croft, Camille Avery, and the corrupt ultrasound clinic.

Audio recordings from the Regency sub-basement played through the room’s surround-sound speakers, capturing Miller’s confession regarding Julian’s orders.

Camille’s fake tears stopped instantly; she froze like a statue, her face draining of every drop of color as the evidence filled the room.

Senator Avery’s jaw dropped in absolute horror, his eyes darting toward the District Attorney’s detectives standing near the entrance.

Marcello turned to the stunned board members, his voice ringing out with unimpeachable, thunderous clarity.

He announced that the only fraud committed against DeLuca Holdings had been orchestrated by the three people sitting at the head of the table.
