Chapter 13 - Shattered Glass

|

The boardroom devolved into chaotic shouts and frantic murmurs as board members stood up from their leather chairs in outrage.

Julian Croft slammed his hands on the table, desperately shouting that the digital evidence was a fabricated deepfake created by Marcello’s programmers.

Detective Morrison of the District Attorney’s office stepped forward, placing a certified warrant for Julian’s arrest directly on the table before him.

The detective announced that the Queens medical clinic had already been raided an hour ago, and the head technician had signed a full confession.

The technician had identified Julian Croft as the man who paid two hundred thousand dollars in cash to fabricate eight months of obstetric records.

Julian collapsed back into his executive chair, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish as the realization of his destruction took hold.

Detective Morrison snapped handcuffs around Julian’s wrists, pulling the trembling lawyer up from his chair in front of the entire board.

Camille suddenly shrieked, jumping to her feet and turning on Julian with hysterical, venomous rage that shattered all remaining pretense.

She screamed that Julian had approached her with the scheme, swearing that Marcello would never discover the truth before the trust deadline passed.

She shrieked that Julian had promised her forty million dollars from the private equity liquidation if she played the role of the grieving mother.

Senator Avery lunged toward his daughter, grabbing her arm and shouting at her to shut her mouth before she destroyed his political career.

Camille pulled away violently, weeping genuine tears of humiliation as two female officers stepped forward to place her under arrest for conspiracy.

Marcello stood across the table, watching the woman who had pretended to carry his child with an expression of profound, detached pity.

He reached across the table and held out his open palm toward Camille.

He told her that the engagement ring she was wearing had belonged to his great-grandmother, a woman of honor and unmatched grace.

He told Camille that her fingers were unworthy of touching a single thread of the DeLuca family legacy.

Camille pulled the five-carat diamond ring from her finger with shaking, tear-stained hands and threw it onto the mahogany table.

The diamond bounced once and settled into Marcello’s steady palm.

The officers escorted Julian Croft and Camille Avery out of the boardroom in handcuffs, while news cameras waiting in the lobby captured every second of their downfall.

Senator Avery stood alone at the table, completely ruined, his face gray with the knowledge that his senate career was officially finished.

Marcello looked at the senator and told him that DeLuca Holdings would pull all political contributions and file civil fraud lawsuits by afternoon.

The senator stumbled out of the room without uttering a single word of defense, his political empire crumbling around his shoulders.

Marcello turned to the remaining board members, whose faces were filled with guilt and profound embarrassment for having doubted him.

The oldest board member stood up and offered an immediate motion of total confidence in Marcello’s executive leadership.

The vote was unanimous, accompanied by a standing ovation that Marcello accepted with a simple, dignified nod.

Marcello turned away from the applauding executives, his eyes seeking out the only person in the room who had never wavered.

He walked straight to Elena Morales, standing before her in the center of the magnificent boardroom, and smiled for the first time in days.
