Chapter 6 - An Offer in the Dark

|
A sharp knock rattled the brass handle of the private lounge door, breaking the fragile silence between them.
Marcello stood up immediately, gesturing for Elena to keep Lily behind the heavy leather sofa.
He approached the door cautiously and peered through the discreet optical peephole before unlocking it.
Frank Vance stepped inside, his expression grim and his dark trench coat damp with late-autumn rain.
Frank reported that Camille had already been spirited away in a tinted town car registered to Senator Avery’s campaign office.
More alarming was the fact that Julian Croft had not left the hotel property; he was waiting in the adjoining conference room.
Julian had demanded an immediate private audience with Elena Morales before the police could be notified.
Marcello’s eyes flashed with fury, his hand tightening into a white-knuckled fist against the doorframe.
He told Frank that Julian had no right to demand anything and ordered him to throw the lawyer out into the street.
Elena stood up from the sofa, gently laying the sleeping Lily across the soft cushions and covering her with her own cardigan.
She walked toward Marcello and told him that she wanted to hear what Julian Croft had to say.
Marcello looked at her with surprise, warning her that men like Julian used words like venomous daggers to manipulate the vulnerable.
Elena looked directly into Marcello’s eyes and said that she had spent years dealing with landlords, loan sharks, and aggressive bosses.
She knew how predators talked when they were trying to buy silence, and she wanted to see Julian’s cards before he played them.
Marcello studied her face for a moment, seeing the fierce, unyielding pride that poverty had failed to break.
He agreed to let her meet Julian, but insisted on standing just beyond the double doors with security personnel.
Elena walked through the connecting door into the conference room, where Julian Croft stood near a panoramic window overlooking Manhattan.
Julian’s silver hair was impeccably groomed, but his silver tie hung slightly loose, betraying his internal agitation.
A thick brown leather briefcase sat open on the glass conference table, revealing stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills.
Julian turned to face Elena, plastering a warm, paternal smile across his aristocratic face that made her stomach turn.
He greeted her warmly, calling her Ms. Morales and inviting her to sit down as if they were old acquaintances.
Elena remained standing near the door, her hands folded calmly in front of her catering apron.
Julian walked over to the table and tapped the stacks of cash, claiming there was half a million dollars inside the briefcase.
He said that this money could buy a comfortable home in the suburbs, pay off all her debts, and secure an elite college education for Lily.
All she had to do was sign a simple, legally binding affidavit stating that her daughter had fabricated the story about the falling belly.
The affidavit claimed that the child had been confused by a costume garment bag and that Elena had coached her to seek attention.
Julian added, in a softer and far more dangerous tone, that rejecting the money would result in catastrophic consequences for her family.
He reminded her that single mothers who brought toddlers to high-end catering shifts often faced severe child neglect investigations.
He smiled coldly, whispering that he had close personal friends in the Department of Child and Family Services who owed him favors.
Elena felt an icy wave of rage wash through her veins, but she did not flinch, and she did not look at the money.
She told Julian Croft that half a million dollars was a lot of money, but it was not enough to buy her daughter’s innocence.
She told him that she would rather scrub floors on her hands and knees until her fingers bled than teach Lily that the truth could be sold.

Julian’s smile vanished instantly, his eyes narrowing into cold, predatory slits as he took a threatening step toward her.
Before he could speak another word, the heavy double doors behind Elena flew open with a deafening crash.
