Chapter 2 - The Locked Drawer

|

The suffocating silence that fell over the grand foyer was heavier than a tombstone.

Vanessa’s manicured hand froze in midair, her diamond rings catching the harsh glare of the crystal chandelier.

Dr. Whitmore adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his gaze piercing through the polished veneer of the woman standing before him.

Luca did not move an inch, but the sudden stillness in his imposing frame was far more terrifying than an explosive outburst of rage.

"I asked you a question, Vanessa," Dr. Whitmore repeated, his medical voice stripped of all polite bedside pleasantries.

"This is ridiculous," Vanessa stammered, taking a hurried step backward toward the curved marble balustrade.

"Benjamin has had a mild seasonal flu, and I merely gave him an over-the-counter pediatric syrup that my personal physician recommended."

"My son does not take over-the-counter medication without my direct knowledge and Dr. Whitmore's explicit approval," Luca said, his voice dropping into a lethal, gravelly register.

Benjamin let out a fragile, shuddering sob against the curve of my neck, his hot tears soaking into the cotton fabric of my maid’s uniform.

"She locked it, Daddy," Benjamin whimpered, his tiny voice barely audible above the grandfather clock ticking in the corner.

"She told me if I spit it out, she would send Claire away and make sure I never saw anyone from my school again."

Hearing those cruel words shattered whatever restraint was left inside Luca Moretti.

He turned his dark eyes toward Marco, his towering chief of security who stood stationed near the front double doors.

"Take three men upstairs to the master suite right now," Luca commanded, the authority in his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling.

"Kick down the door to her private dressing room if it is locked."

"Find every drawer, every safe, and every hidden cabinet."

"Bring me whatever medicine she has been forcing down my boy's throat."

"Luca, you cannot do this!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking as her polished composure completely dissolved into sheer panic.

"That is my private sanctuary, and you have no right to send your thugs through my personal belongings!"

Luca stepped directly into her path, his broad shoulders blocking the staircase completely.

"In this house, Vanessa, you have no rights that supersede the life of my only son."

"If you take one single step toward those stairs, I will have Marco drag you down to the cellar myself."

Above us, the heavy sound of reinforced wood splintering echoed down the corridor as the security team breached the private suite.

Seconds later, Marco descended the grand staircase with swift, purposeful strides, holding a heavy black lacquer jewelry box.

Using a combat knife from his tactical vest, Marco popped the brass lock open right in front of Luca.

Inside lay three dark amber glass vials fitted with calibrated droppers, filled with a cloudy, cerulean-tinted liquid that had no commercial label.

Dr. Whitmore stepped forward, carefully unscrewing the cap to smell the viscous fluid before dipping a sterile testing strip from his medical bag into the bottle.

The physician's face hardened into pure horror as the strip turned a dark, unnatural violet within five seconds.

"This is a high-potency, compounded mixture of veterinary-grade sedative and synthetic neuro-depressants," Dr. Whitmore announced, his voice trembling with indignation.

"Given to an adult, it induces extreme lethargy and brain fog."

"Given to a nine-year-old child over several consecutive days, it deliberately suppresses respiratory function, induces severe organ distress, and simulates a fatal, worsening viral infection."

Luca slowly turned his head to look at the woman he had married only six months ago.

Before he could speak, the distant wail of ambulance sirens pierced the chilly Chicago night, racing up the private gated driveway toward the front doors.
