Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

|

The morning sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting long golden beams across the wet pavement outside the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago.

Rather than burying Vanessa in a shallow grave in the pine woods—the traditional mafia sentence for treason—Luca chose a punishment far more devastating to a narcissist.

He arranged for a complete, unredacted delivery of all evidence directly into the hands of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Every toxicological panel from Dr. Whitmore, every high-definition surveillance clip from the mansion, and every encrypted financial ledger linking Vanessa to Dominic Rossi was placed on the prosecutor's desk.

At precisely eight o’clock in the morning, two unmarked federal sedans pulled up to the rear entrance of the logistics building.

Special agents accompanied by uniformed Chicago police detectives marched into the holding suite with arrest warrants signed by a federal judge.

When the heavy steel cuffs clicked around Vanessa's slender wrists, she began to scream obscenities, fighting the officers like a wild animal.

"Do you know who I am?" she shrieked as they led her down the elevator and out into the chilly morning air.

Waiting outside the barricades were dozens of press photographers and television news crews, tipped off anonymously by Marco.

The cameras flashed relentlessly, capturing the fallen socialite in her disheveled clothes, mascara running down her cheeks, being forced into the back of a police cruiser.

The headlines across every major newspaper and digital outlet exploded within minutes:

"Billionaire Mafia Heiress Arrested in Chilling Poisoning Plot Against Nine-Year-Old Stepson."

"The Bellini Empire Collapses Under Federal Indictments for Attempted Murder and Wire Fraud."

Luca watched the television broadcast from the private waiting lounge on the top floor of Children's Mercy Hospital.

I stood beside him, holding a tray with two fresh cups of tea, watching the woman who had terrorized Benjamin being paraded before the entire world in chains.

"Her family name is eradicated," Luca said, his voice resonant with quiet satisfaction.

"Her assets are frozen by the federal government, her bank accounts are seized, and she will face twenty-five years to life in a maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of parole."

"She wanted prestige and high society, Claire."

"Now, she will eat off plastic trays in an eight-by-ten concrete cell for the rest of her natural life."

I set the tray down on the small table and looked at Luca, noticing the deep lines of exhaustion etched around his eyes.

"Benjamin saw the news on the small television in his room," I told him gently.

Luca stiffened, a flicker of worry crossing his brow.

"Did it scare him?"

"No," I replied, a soft smile touching my lips.

"He asked me if that meant she was never coming back to the house."

"When I told him she would never set foot near him again, he finished his entire bowl of oatmeal and asked if he could draw a picture for you."

A rare, genuine smile broke across Luca’s rugged face, transforming his harsh features into those of a deeply grateful father.

"He is only eating because of you, Claire," Luca said, stepping closer and placing a warm, gentle hand on my shoulder.

"You gave my son his life back, and I will never forget that as long as I live."
