Chapter 14 - Luca's Vow

|

The weeks following the trial brought a serene, restorative calm to the sprawling Moretti estate that none of the long-term staff had ever experienced.

The armed security patrols were moved outside the perimeter walls, replaced inside the gardens by landscapers planting fresh hydrangeas and dogwood trees.

Benjamin’s laughter echoed through the vaulted hallways as he ran across the manicured lawns, his energy fully restored, chasing his new golden retriever puppy named Barnaby.

One evening, after Benjamin had fallen asleep holding his favorite adventure book, Luca knocked softly on the open door of the upstairs study where I was organizing the boy's school schedule.

Luca had traded his dark, tailored mobster suits for an open-collared cashmere sweater, looking more relaxed and content than I had ever seen him.

"Do you have a moment to talk, Claire?" he asked, stepping into the room with two glasses of chilled sparkling water.

"Of course, Mr. Moretti," I replied, setting down my pen and turning my chair toward him.

Luca sat down opposite me, placing the glasses on the desk before leaning forward, his intense gaze fixed on mine with deep sincerity.

"First, I want you to stop calling me Mr. Moretti," Luca began with a soft chuckle.

"After everything we have survived together, I think we have earned the right to use our first names."

I felt a warm blush rise to my cheeks as I nodded.

"Alright... Luca."

Luca took a deep breath, looking down at his hands for a brief moment before meeting my eyes again.

"Over the past month, watching you care for Benjamin, watching him heal because of your patience, your kindness, and your unconditional love, made me realize something fundamental."

"I spent years believing that the only way to keep my son safe was to build a fortress of fear around him."

"I thought more power, more territory, and more ruthless enforcers would guarantee his future."

"But power didn't protect him from the evil inside our own home."

"Love did."

"Your love did."

Luca reached across the desk, gently placing his hand over mine, his touch warm, reassuring, and filled with deep emotion.

"I have begun dismantling our family’s underground operations, Claire."

"I have transferred our entire logistics network into clean, legitimate international shipping and medical supply distribution."

"I want Benjamin to grow up proud of his father’s name, not terrified of the shadows that haunt it."

"And I don't want to build this new life alone."

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal an elegant, custom-crafted sapphire ring that sparkled like the clear morning sky.

"I am not asking you to be an employee anymore, Claire."

"I am asking you to be my partner, my equal, and the mother Benjamin has always known you to be in his heart."

"I love you, Claire, not just for saving my son, but for bringing light and humanity back into my dark life."

"Will you marry me and make our family whole?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down my cheeks as I looked into the eyes of the man who had moved heaven and earth to protect his child.

May you like

"Yes, Luca," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck.

"Yes, with all my heart."
