Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

|

The clinical sterile scent of the pediatric intensive care unit did little to soothe the raging storm burning inside Luca Moretti.

Benjamin lay in the center of the room, hooked up to an array of humming monitors, an IV line steadily dripping cleansing fluids into his veins.

I sat on a small vinyl stool right beside the bed, gently smoothing the boy's brown hair away from his pale forehead while he slept.

Outside the door, the heavy tread of leather shoes signaled the arrival of Marco, who carried a sleek encrypted tablet beneath his arm.

Luca stepped out into the private ante-room, keeping the door slightly ajar so he could maintain visual contact with his sleeping son.

"Give me the surveillance review, Marco," Luca commanded, his voice barely above a whisper, yet brimming with razor-sharp intent.

"We audited the mansion's internal server logs for the past three weeks, Boss," Marco began, bringing up a timestamped security grid on the screen.

"Every evening between seven-thirty and eight-fifteen, the closed-circuit camera covering the hallway outside Master Benjamin's bedroom suffered an intentional signal blackout."

"The security bypass code used to disable the camera was logged to Mrs. Moretti's personal mobile interface."

Luca stared at the digital logs, his jaw muscles clenching with cold fury.

"What about the staff?" Luca asked.

"Has any maid or butler been in that wing without supervision?"

"None," Marco answered firmly.

"Claire was the only person Benjamin allowed near him during the day, but every evening, Vanessa insisted on putting Benjamin to bed personally, claiming she wanted to bond with him."

Before Marco could continue his report, the elevator at the end of the restricted corridor chimed, and high heels clicked loudly against the polished floor.

Vanessa marched down the hallway, wearing a pristine white cashmere coat, her hair styled flawlessly despite the late hour.

Two hospital security guards tried to halt her advance, but she waved her diamond-ringed hand dismissively in their faces.

"Out of my way, I am Luca Moretti's wife, and I demand to see my sick stepson immediately," Vanessa declared loudly, her voice dripping with theatrical distress.

Luca stepped into the corridor, his imposing shadow stretching across the floor until it swallowed her where she stood.

Vanessa instantly switched into an affectionate, tearful persona, reaching her manicured arms out toward him.

"Oh, Luca, thank God!" she cried, pretending to dab nonexistent tears from her eyelashes.

"The guards you left at the house were utterly barbaric to me, but I had to hire a car and rush here the second I heard poor Benny was hospitalized!"

Luca did not move an inch to receive her embrace, his arms folded across his broad chest like an iron wall.

"Who gave you permission to leave the estate, Vanessa?" Luca asked, his voice chilling the air around them.

Vanessa paused, her artificial smile faltering slightly beneath his predatory stare.

"Darling, please, I know you are upset, but you cannot blame me for Dr. Whitmore's incompetence or Benjamin's fragile immune system."

She glanced past Luca's shoulder, spotting me through the glass partition sitting beside Benjamin's bed.

Her eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom as she pointed a manicured finger toward the room.

"Why is that filthy maid still sitting inside my stepson's private medical suite?" Vanessa demanded loudly.

"She is the one who feeds him his meals, Luca!"

"If Benjamin was poisoned, Claire is clearly the person who slipped something toxic into his soup to extort money from our family!"
