Chapter 9 - The Ambush at the Penthouse

|

Before moving against the Rossi syndicate, Luca had one piece of unfinished business that required his personal attention.

The downtown holding facility was an unassuming high-security penthouse suite above a private logistics building owned by the Moretti family.

When Luca entered the room, Vanessa was sitting on a cold leather sofa, her designer clothes disheveled and her elaborate makeup streaked with dry mascara.

Two armed enforcers stood by the reinforced steel door, their weapons drawn and held at low ready.

Vanessa looked up as the heavy door clicked shut, her aristocratic sneer returning as she tried to salvage whatever leverage she thought she possessed.

"You cannot keep me locked up in this filthy warehouse, Luca!" she spat, standing up and smoothing her ruined cashmere skirt.

"My attorney has already noticed my absence, and the police will be tearing this city apart looking for me by morning!"

Luca pulled out a heavy oak chair, turned it around, and sat down calmly, resting his forearms on the backrest.

"No one is looking for you, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice flat and terrifyingly steady.

"Your attorney was arrested two hours ago by federal agents for money laundering on behalf of Dominic Rossi."

"Your two brothers were picked up at O'Hare Airport trying to board a private jet to Zurich with four million dollars in stolen bearer bonds."

"They gave up every encrypted communication, every offshore account, and every wire transfer in exchange for protective custody."

Vanessa’s knees buckled slightly, and she collapsed back onto the sofa, her hands shaking uncontrollably.

Luca tossed a thick manila folder onto the low coffee table between them.

The glossy photographs spilled across the glass surface: high-resolution pictures of her private meetings with Rossi’s enforcers, copies of the veterinary pharmaceutical invoices, and bank statements detailing the thirty-five-million-dollar payoff.

"You traded my son’s life for gambling debts and designer jewelry," Luca said, his dark eyes boring into her soul.

"You held down a sick, defenseless boy and forced poison down his throat while telling him his father despised him."

"He was in the way!" Vanessa suddenly screamed, her mask of civility completely dropping, revealing the rotten core beneath.

"Everything in that mansion was about Benjamin!"

"The late Elena's portrait hanging in the grand hall, your entire fortune tied up in trusts for a weak, sniveling brat who couldn't even look me in the eye!"

"Why should I spend my life playing nursemaid to another woman’s child when I could have owned your entire empire?"

Luca did not flinch, did not shout, and did not raise a hand against her.

The sheer lack of violent reaction from the most dangerous man in Chicago frightened Vanessa far more than a drawn weapon ever could.

"You think power is about money and territory, Vanessa," Luca said softly, leaning forward.

"Power is about loyalty."

"It is about protecting the people who rely on you with your dying breath."

"Claire, a simple woman who earns an hourly wage to care for our home, was willing to face your wrath and risk her entire livelihood to save Benjamin."

"You, with all your wealth, your pedigree, and your fine dresses, are nothing more than a common, cowardly parasite."

Luca stood up, turning his back on her as he walked toward the heavy exit door.

"What are you going to do to me?" Vanessa shrieked, scrambling to her feet as panic overwhelmed her.

"Are you going to shoot me like one of your street rivals?"

Luca paused at the doorway, his hand resting on the polished brass handle.

May you like

"Death is far too clean, far too quick, and far too merciful for what you did to my boy," Luca answered without looking back.

"You are going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a place where your pedigree means absolutely nothing."
