Chapter 12 - The True Mother's Heart

|

Two days later, the morning sun bathed the grand Moretti estate in a warm, welcoming light that it had not seen in months.

The private ambulance brought Benjamin home under the watchful protection of Luca’s personal guard, but the atmosphere around the mansion was completely transformed.

The heavy velvet drapes that Vanessa had insisted on keeping closed were drawn back, allowing bright golden sunshine to flood every marble corridor.

Benjamin walked through the front doors on his own two feet, holding my hand tightly on his left and his father’s hand on his right.

His fever was completely gone, his color had returned to a healthy rosy hue, and for the first time, he smiled as he looked up at the grand staircase.

"The house smells like fresh cinnamon, Claire," Benjamin exclaimed happily, sniffing the sweet aroma wafting from the kitchen.

"That is because the chef baked your favorite apple pastries to celebrate your return," I replied, kneeling down to help him unbutton his winter coat.

Luca stood beside us, watching our interaction with an expression of quiet reverence.

Later that afternoon, while Benjamin was upstairs in his bedroom playing with his model trains under Marco's gentle supervision, Luca asked me to meet him in the second-floor library.

When I entered the room, I found Luca standing beside a glass-fronted antique display cabinet holding a small, ornate carved rosewood box.

"This belonged to Elena, Benjamin's mother," Luca said softly, his fingers lightly tracing the delicate mother-of-pearl inlay on the lid.

"Before she passed away from leukemia five years ago, she made me promise that I would find someone who would love our son for who he is, not for the empire he stands to inherit."

Luca opened the box, revealing a simple silver locket shaped like an angel’s wing, containing a small photograph of baby Benjamin in his mother's arms.

"When I married Vanessa, I thought I was making a strategic move to secure peace in this city and give Benjamin a complete family," Luca confessed, his voice heavy with past regret.

"I was so focused on guarding against outside threats, rivals with guns and bombs, that I failed to see the cruelty festering inside my own dining room."

"You couldn't have known how deeply she was compromised, Mr. Moretti," I said gently, trying to ease the lingering guilt in his eyes.

Luca shook his head, looking directly into my eyes with an intensity that made my breath hitch.

"A real father should have seen it, Claire."

"You saw it."

"You noticed the canceled appointments, you tracked his fever, and when she threatened to destroy your life, you picked my dying boy up in your arms and carried him down those stairs directly into my face."

"You defied me, you defied her, and you risked everything for a child that you did not give birth to."

Luca lifted the silver locket from the velvet lining and held it out toward me.

"Elena left this to be given to the woman who truly guarded our boy's heart."

"I cannot think of anyone on this earth more deserving of this than you, Claire."

Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at the precious family heirloom resting in his scarred palm.

"Mr. Moretti, I cannot accept this... I am only his nanny."

May you like

"You were never just a nanny to him, Claire," Luca whispered, stepping closer and gently pressing the cool silver into my trembling hands.

"And you are certainly not just a nanny to me."
