Chapter 15 - A New Dawn

|

One year later, the sun rose over the Moretti estate, bathing the grand stone terrace in brilliant, celebratory golden light.

The sprawling back gardens, once a guarded compound patrolled by stern men with concealed firearms, were now filled with white linen canopies, colorful balloons, and the joyous sounds of playing children.

It was Benjamin’s tenth birthday, and for the first time in his life, the entire fifth-grade class from his school had been invited to celebrate with him.

Children were running across the green grass, eating ice cream and laughing as Barnaby the golden retriever chased soccer balls across the lawn.

Benjamin stood near the magnificent birthday cake, tall, healthy, and radiant with happiness, wearing a handsome blue blazer and a wide, confident smile.

Dr. Whitmore sat under an umbrella table chatting warmly with my mother, whose medical treatments had been fully funded and overseen by the finest specialists in Chicago, courtesy of the new Moretti Family Health Foundation.

I stood on the stone balustrade wearing a flowing white sundress, feeling the warm summer breeze dance through my hair, the sapphire ring on my finger sparkling in the sunlight.

Warm, strong arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind, and Luca pulled me close against his chest, resting his chin softly against my shoulder.

"Look at him, Claire," Luca whispered, his voice brimming with a father’s immense pride and deep peace.

"A year ago, I was carrying him into an emergency room, wondering if he would survive the night."

"Now look at our boy."

"He is thriving, Luca," I replied, turning my head to press a tender kiss against his cheek.

"He is safe, he is loved, and he knows he will never be abandoned again."

Luca smiled, watching the children play without a single bodyguard in sight.

The underworld empire was completely behind him; his vast resources were now dedicated to building pediatric research wings, supporting children's hospitals across the country, and providing safe havens for vulnerable families.

Suddenly, Benjamin spotted us standing together on the terrace.

His face lit up with absolute joy as he broke away from his friends and sprinted up the stone steps two at a time.

"Mom! Dad!" Benjamin shouted at the top of his lungs, rushing straight into our arms.

Luca scooped Benjamin up into his powerful arms, lifting him into the air just as he had when he was a toddler, before pulling me into the warm embrace.

Benjamin wrapped one arm around his father's neck and the other around mine, resting his cheek against my forehead.

"What is it, birthday boy?" Luca asked with a booming laugh, his eyes shining with pure happiness.

"I just wanted to say thank you," Benjamin whispered softly, his blue eyes looking back and forth between the two of us.

"For the party?" I asked, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead.

"For the party, for Barnaby, and for making sure we are always together," Benjamin answered with heartfelt sincerity.

"You are the best mom and dad in the whole wide world."

Luca looked at me over our son's shoulder, his heart overflowing with gratitude, peace, and eternal devotion.

The nightmare was over, the shadows of betrayal had been banished forever, and under the brilliant Chicago sky, our family stood unbroken, united, and truly free at last.
