Chapter 8 - The Shadow Behind the Mask

While Benjamin drifted back into a peaceful, natural sleep under the careful supervision of the pediatric nursing staff, Luca summoned me into the private hospital boardroom.
Spread across the long mahogany conference table were dozens of financial printouts, encrypted call logs, and international wire transfer records.
Marco stood beside a digital projector, illuminating the white wall with detailed dossiers of the Bellini crime family and their offshore corporate shell companies.
"Drink some coffee, Claire," Luca said gently, pushing a warm ceramic mug toward me.
"You have been on your feet for fourteen hours protecting my son, while I was too blind to see the viper sleeping in my own bed."
"You were trying to protect your family's alliances, Mr. Moretti," I answered softly, wrapping my cold fingers around the warm mug.
"Vanessa was very skilled at hiding her true colors when you were in the room."
Marco cleared his throat and pointed the laser remote at the projection screen.
"It runs much deeper than marital cruelty or domestic jealousy, Boss," Marco revealed, pulling up bank statements originating from the Cayman Islands.
"Three months before Vanessa married you, her family’s private luxury shipping line went bankrupt following major losses at illicit gaming tables in Monaco."
"She owed over thirty-five million dollars to high-interest loan syndicates operated by Dominic Rossi."
Luca’s eyes narrowed into lethal slits at the mention of the Rossi family, his longtime rivals in the Chicago transportation and port corridors.
"Rossi owned her," Luca surmised, his voice dripping with venom.
"Completely," Marco confirmed, switching slides to show recorded encrypted phone exchanges between Vanessa and Dominic Rossi’s personal lieutenant.
"The deal was simple: Vanessa agreed to marry you under the guise of an aristocratic underworld union to settle her family's debts."
"Once inside the estate, her objective was to eliminate Benjamin without raising suspicion, making it appear as a natural, tragic childhood illness."
"Under the prenuptial agreement you signed, in the event of your child's death, Vanessa would become the sole primary beneficiary of the Moretti estate trusts in the event of your untimely passing."
"Rossi planned to execute you within six months of Benjamin's funeral, leaving Vanessa to inherit your shipping terminals and hand them over to the Rossi syndicate."
The cold, calculated depravity of the plot filled the boardroom with an icy dread.
They had not just targeted an empire; they had chosen to torture a sweet nine-year-old child to death over weeks of calculated agony just to seize real estate and harbor contracts.
"And canceling the doctor appointments?" I asked, my voice trembling with disgust.
"Dr. Whitmore is a renowned physician," Marco explained.
"The moment Whitmore examined the boy, the toxicity would have been unmasked."
"Vanessa kept postponing the visits until the weekend, calculating that Benjamin's heart would fail on Saturday night while Dr. Whitmore was out of town at a medical summit."
"She didn't count on Claire carrying Benjamin down those stairs in broad daylight right in front of you, Boss."
Luca stood up slowly, adjusting the cuffs of his dark tailored shirt.
"Claire did what a real mother would have done," Luca said, his gaze lingering on me with profound respect and an emotion far warmer than gratitude.
"She defied fear, defied authority, and saved my blood."
Luca turned toward Marco, his command absolute and cold as iron.
"Notify our captains across all five districts."

"Mobilize every operational crew we have from the river to the south docks."
"It is time to dismantle the Bellini name, destroy the Rossi syndicate, and remind this city why no one touches a child of the Moretti family."
