Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

|

The silence in the grand foyer was so heavy it felt suffocating.

Vanessa took another step back, her high heels clicking sharply against the cold marble.

Her knuckles turned white as she clutched the folds of her burgundy designer gown.

Adrian Blackwood towered over her, standing tall and motionless like an immovable mountain.

For seven months, she had looked down on him from above, pitying him with false smiles.

Now, she had to tilt her chin just to meet his piercing gray eyes.

"You're lying," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling as her polished composure began to crack.

"The doctors at the city clinic said your spinal cord was irreparably severed."

"Those doctors were paid very well to say whatever Julian Blackwood instructed them to say," Adrian replied coldly.

The mention of Julian's name made Vanessa flinch as if she had been slapped across the face.

Emma remained on the floor beside the overturned plaid blanket, her breath catching in her throat.

Her knee throbbed with a sharp, burning pain where it had struck the stone, but she barely felt it.

Her mind was spinning in dizzying circles as she looked up at the man she had bathed, fed, and comforted every day.

He had held her hand in the dark during his simulated night terrors while whispering that he was helpless.

A wave of bitter betrayal washed through her chest, hot and suffocating.

"You let me carry you into your bed every single night," Emma said, her voice shaking with quiet devastation.

Adrian turned his head toward Emma, and for the briefest second, the ice in his expression melted.

He reached down, offering her his hand with open palms, but Emma pulled back instantly.

Her refusal hit him like a physical blow, though his jaw remained set like iron.

"Emma, I swear to you, it was the only way to keep you safe from what was coming," he said quietly.

"Safe from what?" she asked, rising to her feet on trembling legs and wiping tears from her cheeks.

Before Adrian could answer, the heavy double doors at the entrance swung open with an arrogant thud.

Julian Blackwood strolled into the mansion, his hands buried deep in the pockets of his custom charcoal suit.

A smug smirk rested on his handsome face, the kind of smile that belonged to a man who thought he already owned the world.

"Vanessa, darling, why did you scream all the way from the gallery?" Julian called out without looking up.

He stopped dead in his tracks the moment his eyes landed on the tall figure standing in front of the wheelchair.

The color drained from Julian's face so fast he looked like a walking corpse under the chandelier lights.

The keys in his hand slipped from his fingers and crashed loudly onto the polished floor.

"Adrian?" Julian choked out, his voice cracking into an unrecognizable squeak.

"Good evening, cousin," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal baritone.

"You look surprised to see me greeting you on my own two feet."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically between Vanessa, the empty wheelchair, and the top of the steep staircase.

He realized in an instant that the carefully calculated tragedy they had planned tonight had collapsed completely.

"This is impossible," Julian stammered, backing toward the foyer wall.

"Nothing is impossible when you have patience, Julian," Adrian said, taking one deliberate step forward.

"And my patience with both of you has officially expired."
