Chapter 7 - The Desperate Pact

|
Twenty miles outside the city limits, an abandoned warehouse sat shrouded in darkness beneath the heavy rain.
Julian paced back and forth across the damp concrete floor, clutching a burner phone against his ear like a lifeline.
His expensive suit was ruined, covered in dirt and wrinkled from his frantic escape after his corrupt lawyer posted his astronomical bail.
Across the room, Vanessa sat on a rusty metal crate, shivering in her ruined designer clothes and chewing her fingernails raw.
"The accounts are completely frozen, Julian!" she screamed suddenly, throwing an empty water bottle across the room in hysteria.
"My credit cards were declined at the gas station, and my father changed the security codes to our family estate!"
Julian turned around and glared at her with wild, bloodshot eyes that terrified her into silence.
"Shut your mouth, Vanessa, or I swear I will leave you here to rot on your own," he snarled through clenched teeth.
He turned back to the phone, speaking into the receiver in a hushed, dangerous whisper to the criminal contact on the line.
"I don't care what the price is; I want Adrian Blackwood dead before the sun rises tomorrow morning."
The voice on the other end answered with a cold, metallic rasp that sent shivers down Julian's spine.
"Adrian has doubled his personal security detail; every former military operative in the state is guarding his primary residence."
"Then don't hit the residence, you idiot!" Julian hissed, his mind twisting into pure, calculated malice.
He looked toward Vanessa, a wicked, desperate smile slowly spreading across his bruised face.
"He has a weakness now, a little nobody who has been playing the role of his devoted Florence Nightingale."
Vanessa raised her head, understanding instantly who Julian was referring to in his twisted scheme.
"The nurse," Vanessa whispered, her voice laced with venomous jealousy.
"He looked at her last night like she was the only thing that mattered in that entire mansion."
"Exactly," Julian said, nodding vigorously as his twisted plan began to take solid shape in the dark.
"Adrian thinks he has won because he humiliated us in front of the board and took away our inheritance."
He leaned down until his face was inches from Vanessa's, his breath smelling of cheap whiskey and panic.
"If we take Emma, Adrian will walk right into whatever trap we lay for him without calling a single cop."
"And what happens after he gives us the money to get her back?" Vanessa asked, her conscience completely drowned by greed.
Julian laughed, a harsh, maniacal sound that echoed off the empty concrete walls like a death knell.
"Nobody walks away from this alive except us, darling; Adrian and his little nurse are going to disappear forever."

He pressed the end button on the burner phone and snapped the plastic device in half with his bare hands.
The hunt was on, and they had nothing left to lose except their own freedom.
