Chapter 11 - The Gala of Truth

|
The Grand Metropolitan Hotel glowed like a diamond against the midnight sky of Manhattan's exclusive Upper East Side.
Hundreds of photographers and television reporters lined the velvet ropes of the red carpet, flashing cameras at arriving billionaires and celebrities.
Suddenly, a pristine black Maybach limousine pulled up to the grand entrance, causing an immediate frenzy among the press corps.
The chauffeur opened the door, and Adrian Blackwood stepped out onto the red carpet in a tailored tuxedo, looking utterly magnificent.
A collective gasp echoed down the crowded avenue as the media realized he was walking without a cane, a brace, or assistance.
Before the reporters could shout their first question, Adrian turned and extended his hand into the vehicle with royal courtesy.
Emma stepped out beside him, wearing an emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her graceful figure with breathtaking sophistication.
Her brown hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, and a modest diamond pendant—a family heirloom Adrian had given her—rested at her throat.
She held his arm with quiet confidence, matching his confident strides as they walked past the blinding flashbulbs and entered the grand ballroom.
Inside, crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over five hundred members of high society who stopped their conversations in stunned silence.
Whispers rippled through the massive hall like a tidal wave as the supposed invalid walked to the center of the marble floor with his caregiver.
Suddenly, the grand double doors on the mezzanine balcony were shoved open with theatrical, hysterical violence.
Vanessa Blackwood stood at the top of the sweeping staircase, wearing a disheveled couture gown and clutching a glass of champagne.
Her hair was wild, her eyes were bloodshot, and her face was twisted into a bitter, sneering mask of hatred.
"Look at the noble hero and his little gold-digging saint!" Vanessa screamed over the classical orchestra, which immediately ceased playing.
The socialites gasped, raising their champagne flutes to their lips as the scandal unfolded live before their eager eyes.
"Adrian Blackwood is a monster who faked his recovery to torment his loyal family!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing an unsteady finger down at Emma.
"And that girl is nothing but a low-class opportunist who seduced him while he was vulnerable to steal my rightful inheritance!"
The room buzzed with scandalous murmurs, but Emma did not look down; she held her chin high, her grip on Adrian's arm steady and proud.
Adrian raised one single finger toward the technician booth above the stage, his face completely devoid of anger or panic.
Suddenly, the massive panoramic video screens lining the ballroom flickered to life, cutting through the murmurs with crystal clarity.
The giant monitors displayed high-definition security footage of the grand foyer from three nights ago, accompanied by crisp, amplified audio.
Vanessa's voice echoed through the high-end sound system with horrifying clarity: “He's a cripple now. He has nothing left.”
The screen showed Vanessa deliberately stepping behind the wheelchair, bracing her hands, and violently shoving Adrian toward the steep stairs.
The footage captured Emma diving across the marble, tearing her knee open on the stone as she stopped the wheelchair inches from death.

A horrified shriek went up from the wealthy crowd as Vanessa watched her own calculated crime broadcast to the entire city elite.
Vanessa dropped her champagne glass, watching it shatter on the balcony floor as her face turned completely translucent with pure horror.
